Emma Stone brought out her inner Estella yesterday on the streets of New York City, wearing a look that became synonymous with Gwyneth Paltrow’s iconic on and off screen wardrobe in the ’90s.
Photographed in Midtown arriving at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actor wore the leaf green silk blouse and skirt set; look 40 from the Donna Karan spring summer 1996 collection. The buttonless blouse, held together delicately at the bust with a small piece of fabric, along with the slinky bias slip skirt, was most famously worn by Paltrow in the 1998 movie Great Expectations.
Styled by Petra Flannery, Stone kept accessories simple and in line with Gwyneth’s original look. Stone wore black cut-out Manolo Blahnik Susa mules and simple diamond stud earrings. While Gwyneth sported her then-signature long, blonde layers, Stone wore her lightly tousled auburn bob, making for a fall-ready color palette.
Back in 2021, Paltrow spoke to Vogue in her Life in Looks instalment, where she shed light on the costuming of Great Expectations and shared more details on what became one of cinema’s most iconic looks.
“So, this is Great Expectations. This was a Donna Karan outfit. All of my clothes in that movie were Donna Karan, pretty much.”
Paltrow also remembered meeting the costume designer and being told that “everything in the movie was green. Every set, every fabric, every costume. And I thought she was kidding.”
The Goop founder also recalled her own hand in the costume. “I had remembered that Donna had done a very green collection and it just so happened that it was all kind of perfect, and perfectly nineties, and elegant, and perfect for this character. It s so funny that this look got so much, and continues to get so much traction,” she said, adding that the “very sexy” and “career highlight” scene where she kissed Ethan Hawke probably also had something to do with the green set becoming so memorable.
That revered Donna Karan collection feels so right for now—D.K’s ’90s designs propeled an era of sensual and powerful dressing, with polished, put together separates that live on today in the style lexicon of houses from The Row to Khaite—and even Paltrow’s own revitalized label GWYN.
Emma Stone’s contemporary style streak continues too. Out promoting her forthcoming film Bugonia, the recent Vogue cover star has stayed true to her Louis Vuitton ambassadorship, wearing a sheer, pale pink L.V. gown to the movie’s New York premiere. In a more casual look, Stone opted for a butter yellow Khaite sweater, Maria McManus slip skirt, and some mesh pumps, adding a Louis Vuitton shoulder-bag. The Stone school of style remains elegant and soft-toned.
With Vogue World: Hollywood kicking off this Sunday October 26, it feels right that Stone would swerve her allegiance to L.V. to channel an onscreen icon.
