Rihanna has become the de facto queen of the Met Gala carpet. From her magnificent yellow Guo Pei from 2015’s “China: Through the Looking Glass,” to her Papal Margiela look for “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” in 2018, the singer and entrepreneur’s fashion knows no bounds.

After shutting down last year’s carpet in a show-stopping Valentino Haute Couture dress, with a voluminous coat made of 3D camellias, we can’t help but wonder: What does Rihanna have in store for the 2024 Met Gala?

This year’s May 6 Met, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” is dedicated to breathing new life into garments too old and fragile to be worn again. That blend of old and new, along with the “Garden of Time” dress code, leaves us a lot of options for Rih’s look.

So, in the spirit of the occasion, we’ve taken a deep dive into the Vogue Runway archives to guess—or suggest—what Rihanna could wear to the 2024 Met Gala.

If Margiela Artisinal had an older sister, it would be Alexander McQueen’s spring 2007 collection. Originally worn on the runway by Raquel Zimmermann, this dress in particular seems well-suited for the Fenty founder. The sexy, exaggerated proportions and the flowers bursting from the seams have Rihanna all over it.

With the exhibit’s land, sea, and sky sub-themes, we could see Rihanna leaning into the campiness with this over-the-top couture sailor outfit from Jean Paul Gaultier’s final collection before his retirement. A piece with incredible significance, plus a little patented cheek, seems right up her alley.

Leave it to someone of Rihanna’s magnitude to pull from one of McQueen’s most revered collections, spring 2001’s “Voss.” This piece in particular, with its magnificent headpiece affixed with greenery, and its reverence for nature, would be perfect.

When Rihanna does anything, she goes big. We can see her leaning hard into the Met’s garden party brief with this resplendent orchid dress by John Galliano—headpiece and all.
