There’s nothing I love more than an unlikely Hollywood friendship, whether it’s Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart or John Mulaney and Pete Davidson (as Mulaney said in his most recent stand-up special: “He has tattoos, and I am plain”). I’ve written before about how much I admire Marty Supreme star Timothée Chalamet’s well-documented bond with Tilda Swinton, but it appears there’s a new age-gap mutual admiration society in town: the one between Chalamet and Scottish singer Susan Boyle.
Chalamet recently named the now-multimillionaire former Britain’s Got Talent contestant as one of the British celebrities he considered worthy of owning a Marty Supreme jacket (alongside Lewis Hamilton and Victoria and David Beckham), telling BBC News that he was “moved” by Boyle’s story. “She dreamt big, bigger than all of us. Who wasn’t moved by that? I remember that like it was yesterday. That was, like, the advent of YouTube.”
As it turns out, Boyle is no less a fan of Chalamet’s, sharing a screenshot from the interview on Instagram on Wednesday and captioning it: “This has been so incredibly touching to read. I’m very flattered, @tchalamet. Those early days were quite something, and to know that moment meant something to you all these years on truly humbles me. We all start somewhere, with a dream and a bit of hope, don’t we? We should all dream big! I wish you every success as you continue to dream your own dream. Thank you for your kindness and for remembering that moment so fondly. With love, Susan.”
I don’t know whether Chalamet and Boyle have ever chopped it up in person—I kind of think they probably… haven’t?—but I’m so charmed by the coziness and cordiality of this budding friendship. The concept of Chalamet and Boyle eventually taking their online buddyism IRL gives me the same feeling of warmth and comfort that watching a bunch of Great British Bake Off reruns on Netflix does, which leads me to ask the Hollywood powers that be: can Chalamet and Boyle please be next season’s all-star contestants on that show? I’d love to see them collab on a galette!
