Katie Holmes does not have TikTok—although that’s not to say the street style star is immune to seeking outfit inspiration from those around her, including her friends and film. But rather than dip in and out of social media’s fleeting trends or viral moments, the actor is already thinking about what tried-and-true classics she will return to once the cold snap ends in New York.
One humble wardrobe staple in particular is on the brain right now: tank tops. “I tend to go with what I like, and for spring, it’s usually the same silhouettes,” Holmes tells Vogue. “I can’t wait to get back into a tank top. I usually wear them with a long skirt or baggy pants, so it feels very comfortable. I’m looking forward to wearing nice simple slip dresses again too. It’s going to be great to wear less layers…I’m sick of all the laundry!”
For some newness this season to pair with tank vest tops, Holmes’ interest has also been piqued by R13’s currently sold-out oversized cropped boyfriend jeans adorned with a splashy floral print. In keeping with her effortless approach to dressing, the Rare Objects star said she’d up the cool factor by pairing them with a flip flop or kitten heel.
Speaking while at the launch party for 11 Juillet—a line which sees elegant handbags accentuated with heirloom-worthy diamond, malachite, mother of pearl, and onyx emblems—Holmes had teamed her glossy black calf leather Clementine crossbody from the sister-led brand with an all-black outfit (and a bordeaux manicure for good measure).
As for what’s typically in her bag, as well as her keys and phone, Holmes said she will never leave home without some of her trusty rosebud salve lip balm—and a book for the subway. Right now, it’s a copy of Intermezzo, Sally Rooney’s highly-anticipated novel centered around the complicated dynamics between two brothers in the wake of their father’s death.
Taking the train tends to provide some outfit inspiration too, as does checking out what fellow culture lovers are wearing. “I love to go to the opera and the ballet—not just on the gala nights. I always like to get dressed up too and see the beautiful outfits the ladies wear. I actually follow the opera Instagram and I love to see how people put things together.” With the American Ballet Theater and New York City Ballet spring seasons on the horizon, Holmes said she’s readying to dust down some great vintage dresses she picked up recently at her favorite spot, Dessert Vintage on Orchard Street in lower Manhattan. No stranger to a little bit of frou-frou where necessary, she teased that we can expect to see an abundance of feathers. “Wearing a glamorous dress to the ballet or opera makes me feel like I am the New York woman I dreamt of being when I was a little girl,” she laughed.
Holmes also divulged that she’s excited to don some fabulous outfits to go see Glengarry Glen Ross, which opens on Broadway next week, and cheer on her Our Town stagemate Donald Webber Jr. Another must-see for the theater lover in the city is Othello, which features Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal tread the boards for an ultra-limited, highly sought-after 15-week run.
As the 11 Juillet soirée stretched on at The Mark’s Caviar Kaspia, Holmes congratulated the founders, Texas-based twin sisters Mary Kay Bowden and Kim Willson, on the launch of their venture. “We love her so much, we feel like we grew up with her,” the duo said of the perennial fashion plate.
It was a full-circle moment for the pair, as they had spent their early 20s living on the Upper East Side. “It still feels like home,” Bowden said, nodding out the window to tony East 77th Street. To celebrate the unveiling of the collection of handbags and fine jewelry, the sisters were surrounded by industry friends and family from New York, their native Kentucky, and their base in Houston. “The name is a nod to our Southern roots and our love for Parisian elegance and luxury—11 Juillet is the 11th of July, which is our birthday,” Willson added with a smile.
As guests clinked glasses of Champagne and enjoyed mini versions of caviar and crème fraîche-topped potatoes at the Stateside outpost of the famed French eatery, the venue perfectly mirrored that fusion of influences.
