From the genteel oxford to the suave brogue, mannish footwear held a certain irresistible charm throughout the fall. And now that summer’s afoot why revert to a slovenly looking flip-flop when designers are offering far chicer, heat-appropriate options that still flirt with androgyny?
“It’s a play on the traditional wingtip brogue,” says Rag Bone’s Marcus Wainwright of the inventive cutout shoe in arresting bubblegum pink he designed with partner David Neville. “But this version feels light and looks playful and edgy with dresses and shorts.” Similarly, Proenza Schouler’s perforated peep-toe offers “the feeling of being covered up, but with the ease of a sandal,” says Lazaro Hernandez of his and **Jack McCollough’**s gleaming metallic creation.
Other polished suitors include Jil Sander’s mesh-leather and Miu Miu’s more feminine, tap-shoe style oxfords. Both in brilliant, sun-reflecting white, they are as fitting for dapper soirees as no-nonsense work appointments. For those wishing to dabble in more casual downtown affairs there’s Opening Ceremony’s bohemian rope-weave flats or Soulland’s avant-garde sandal-shoe hybrids, which promise to keep their cool, despite the upcoming soaring temperatures.
