Given that the new Costume Institute exhibition is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” it’s no surprise that several Met Gala attendees stepped out in accessories fit for a dandy—think walking canes, watch fobs, and even a monocle on the likes of Janelle Monáe. And there were many a hat! Bowlers, fedoras, and floppy Bianca Jagger-style ’70s chapeaux were all over the carpet—you’d have thought it was Easter Sunday!
The dress code of the night was “Tailored for You,” and guests were asked to come as their most authentic expressive selves—with a dash of menswear. Kim Kardashian wore a croc leather Chrome Hearts two-piece look, which she accessorized with a private-eye-esque fedora and a watch-fob-like chain. On Rihanna’s neck was a floppy 19th-century-inspired bow tie—part of her epic Marc Jacobs look—though of course her best accessory was her baby bump. Her husband and Met Gala co-chair, A$AP Rocky, carried an engraved silver umbrella that fit the weather accordingly. Teyana Taylor also seemed to tick every box with a slew of dandified accessories. Cane—check. Watch fob—check. Fedora—check. And plenty of brooches. Here are our favorite dandy accessories on the Met Gala red carpet.
