Gone are the days when models had to dress like a blank canvas for their various go-sees. This new crop of models are embracing their personal style and expressing their individuality through their fashion choices—be it with jeans and a tee, or a statement dress. Every month, Vogue is diving into the stylish wardrobe of a buzzy model of the moment, to see what they wear to their casting calls. This isn’t any old clothing haul!

First up, meet Jamaican-British model Alva Claire. After being discovered at 18-years-old, Claire made her first catwalk appearance for Savage x Fenty in 2019. Claire has since signed with IMG Models and has walked for labels such as Luar, Altuzarra, and Prabal Gurung. Claire has also graced the covers of magazines such as Vogue Thailand, Elle U.K., and Office

Below, the model discusses her discovery story, her favorite assignment to date, and what’s in her closet. (Hint: She loves a good vintage find.)

Vogue: What was your discovery story?

Alva Claire: Every model has a different story. I was scouted a lot when I was in my late teens, but the industry [wasn’t what] it is today. I was first signed at 18 when I read an article about curve modeling in a weekly mag, and I applied to the agency mentioned.

What’s been your favorite job thus far?

There have been so many highlights. One of my highlights from last season was walking for Luar at the end of New York Fashion Week in Brooklyn.

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is always led by my mood. There’s a lot of vintage boots and jackets. I love silly little dresses and chunky boots, and always jewelry. I’m big on miniskirts, ripped T-shirts, and funky little bags. I have a big mix of new and old pieces that I’ve had for years. At the moment, I’m enjoying different silhouettes and playing with shapes.

What’s your perfect casting look?

I’m wearing a vintage short pale-pink distressed dress that I picked up in Santa Fe, and some heavy duty boots. I have my favorite heels that I change into—I can fit them into almost any handbag! I have my big leather jacket with my Collina Strada belt; I love the stars and the velvet. It’s always good to show my legs and figure [on a casting], but the most important thing is to feel strong and like myself—that’s my way.
