Cinemaphiles may scoff at this next statement, but sometimes (often), I enjoy watching movies purely for the visuals—meaning, I could care less about the actual plot, character development, or big, climactic ending. Can’t a movie just be fun to look at? Not everything needs to be as masterfully-written as Citizen Kane or The Godfather. Specifically, I love seeing the unsung fashion in B-movies. Films that were critically-panned at the time, but feature a killer wardrobe nonetheless. For instance: 20 years ago today, one such feature film—Supercross—made its debut on the big screen; I still find its edgy racing style compelling today.
Should you care about the actual plot, I will give you the abbreviated version: Following the suspicious death of their father, brothers K.C. (Steve Howey) and Trip (Mike Vogel) encourage each other to get back on their bikes, and take part in the Las Vegas Motocross Championships. There’s good ol’ fashioned sibling rivalry, camaraderie, and plenty of high-paced vroom-vroom bike racing scenes. But for me, I have long watched the movie purely for the fashions alone. The moto outfits, brought to life by costume designer Elaine Montalvo, completely steal the show.
Not dissimilar to the looks in 2004’s Torque, the outfits in Supercross embody the bright racing uniforms that professional dirt bike riders wear out on the tracks. You simply can’t miss the extremely-colorful get ups in shades of neon orange, purple, and yellow—with the graphic racing stripes and flashy sponsorship logos plastered all over them. Yet, in Supercross, the best outfits are worn off the bike; Leather pants are paired nonchalantly whit white tank tops, or long-sleeved racing shirts with jeans. The looks feel cool and authentic.
Of course, my fascination with moto style may have to do with it being all over the recent resort and spring 2026 runways. Two decades later, the sartorial vibe of the movie feels very current. This season, shows like Diesel, Acne Studios, and Louis Vuitton all featured striped leather moto jackets that immediately caught my eye. Sleek and structured, they are precisely the kind of jackets that the Supercross characters could wear if the movie was set today—especially the characters Zoe (Sophia Bush) and Piper (Cameron Richardson), the supportive girlfriends who (for some reason) also deck themselves out in moto gear.
What I love about the Supercross approach, is how authentic the styling of the racing fashion feels. These aren’t high-fashion runway serves—rather, ensembles you could actually envision being worn out on the streets. Consider it, then, a prime mood board for styling the season’s new crop of moto pieces. That Martine Rose moto shirt I have been eyeing? I personally am inspired by Supercross to pair it with a pair of baggy jeans and flip-flops. I may not be able to perform a backflip on a bike, but I can look like I can.
