Objects of Affection: Aimee Ng, Chief Curator of the Frick, on the Museum’s Greatest Treasures

When, back in April, the Frick Collection reopened after a yearslong renovation and expansion, devoted patrons heaved a big sigh of relief. Despite its prominent footprint on East 70th Street and Fifth Avenue, the 90-year-old museum has long been one of Manhattan’s most cherished hidden gems, and to go so long without access to its tranquil Garden Court, light-filled Portico Gallery, and august West Gallery was a sad thing—even with its actual art ingeniously rehoused just a few blocks north, in the Breuer building on 75th and Madison.

Well, whether or not you’ve had a chance to visit the Frick since the spring, and survey the new auditorium, café, and gallery space on the second floor, the museum’s Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator, Aimee Ng, is here to give you an intimate tour of some of its masterpieces. Traveling from the mannered Gainsboroughs in the Dining Room to the cheeky Bouchers in the West Vestibule; from Vermeer’s Officer and Laughing Girl and Bellini’s St. Francis in the Desert to Rembrandt’s lordly 1658 self-portrait and Ingres’s sly depiction of the Comtesse d’Haussonville, Ng shares just a smattering of the artworks that make the Frick’s collection so singular. Follow along as she charts her “Objects of Affection”—then be sure to book a ticket to see everything for yourself.
