“James’ House” and “Hunting Heart” are part of the program of the side events taking place during the PhotoVogue Festival.
“James House” and “Hunting Heart” are two projects part of the exhibition presented by Leica Galerie Milano, inside the recently renovated Leica Store. They both are love stories in black and white, taken between 1999 and 2023 Jacob Aue Sobol and Sara Aue Sobol: the first is a love that grew amidst the ice, when the photographer went to Greenland. The second narrates the love between Jacob- a "father, fisherman, and photographer" - and his wife, Sara, shared through the images they both created.
“James house” is a visual exploration of the three years Sobol spent in Greenland and his encounter with James, an Inuit man who taught him how to hunt, fish, and survive in a extreme environment. "James taught me how to spot seals and use a hunter s tools. He taught me when to speak and when to be silent. How to be present. For the years I was in Tiniteqilaaq, James s house seemed like the center of the universe. It was full of laughter, tears, and silence. A place of warmth and embrace." says Jacob Aue Sobol
“Hunting Heart” is a collaborative work in which Jacob s vision is harmoniously combined with Sara s to give the audience an intimate portrait of their family life. The black and white of James s images are intertwined with Sara s colourful visions. Their photographs portray their children, their home and everyday life with intensity and tenderness. Like Jacob says, photography is the medium he found out to be the best for him to connect with people and places and to create and share intimacy. And the use of highly contrasted black and white is for him like a privileged path he creates for the viewer, to immediately connect with their emotion.
The two stories in the exhibition tell us about the complexity of human relationships, across different cultures and countries and in different environments. "James House" tells the story of a boy who becomes a man and then a fisherman, searching for his self-sufficiency, while "Hunting Heart" surprises us as the revealing chapter of this epic: Sara meets Jacob, and together they become something else, in life as parents and in photography, with two voices that blend without ever becoming confused. “Hunting Heart" is the meeting of two great artists, and I am proud to be able to exhibit this project in Milan for the first time.” - Maurizio Beucci, curator and Head of Leica Akademie Italy
Family. Nature. Photography. Fundamental words for Jacob Aue Sobol. In the end, all his photographs are love stories. Love for life. For the other. For family. "James House" and even more so "Hunting Hearts" are love stories. An essential experience that changed Jacob is his encounter with Sara, with whom he has had two children and with whom he shares life and an approach to photography; she is also a photographer and co-author of this project. Their entire world is narrated in a continuous shot, like a stream of consciousness in images, in an inseparable cycle that makes up their daily lives. - Claudio Composti, curator
For many of his works Jacob Aue Sobol uses, among other cameras, the Leica M Monochrom, of which he became the first global ambassador. It is a tool that allows him, thanks to the absence of a matrix of colored filters and very high resolution, to make uncompromising choices for his raw aesthetics.
The Leica M Monochrom, designed exclusively for black and white photography, is solid and reliable. It is simultaneously vintage and an example of the most advanced photographic technology.
On November 18 and 19 Leica Akademie (Via Mengoni, 4, Milano) offers a masterclass during which Jacob and Sara Aue Sobol will be present. This two-day journey aims to inspire the participant to find their own voice and personal expression. For more information: Leica masterclass.
