“Swim Till I Sank” is part of the program of the side events taking place during the PhotoVogue Festival.
Gabriele Stabile has reworked his photographic archive, after years spent as a photojournalist in Italy, the United States, the Middle East and North Africa. He finally chose to exhibit his archive at Micamera, since he wanted to give more space and a less ephemeral value, to the stories behind his photographs: he didn t want to fit in a specific narrative that it was not his, who in first person lived those impactful moments.
The photographer gives life back to images consumed by the news system, wandering between rationality and the subconscious and creating new horizons by using different materials (acrylics, canvas, wood). By reworking the photographs, Stabile trajects them into a dreamlike dimension in which memories and facts can expand and assume blurred shapes. The Aristotelian units of photojournalism have definitively disappeared.
The artist s act goes through two moments: the immediate recording of the event and the reworking of the material when, after years, it has lost its "relevance" and when the exact memory of where the photo was taken has fade away. After all, the practice of imagination is the fundamental exercise to breathe life and truth back into the world.
The book, published by RVM-Hub in 2023, was finalist at LUMA Dummy Book Awar and was also nominated among the finalist for the award of best book of the year at PHotoESPAÑA. It won the Premio Bastianelli.
In the weekend after the opening, Gabriele Stabile will held the workshop FARE ARTE. Binomi fantastici e dove trovarli.
