Every so often, the Princess of Wales turns the glamour dial from “demure” to “disco ball”, eschewing her clean-cut Catherine Walker coat dresses and staid Alexander McQueen suiting in favor of gowns embellished with a constellation of sequins. Think the golden Jenny Packham look she appeared in at the No Time To Die premiere in 2021, or the emerald Needle Thread gown she selected for King Charles’s 75th birthday at Clarence House last month.

Tonight, to host a reception for members of the Diplomatic Corps at Buckingham Palace, Kate slipped into the same Jenny Packham dress she wore while attending the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan and Princess Rajwa Al Saif in Amman earlier this year. The shell-pink design is embellished with thousands of paillettes, not to mention a crystal belt, but it still didn’t outshine her jewelry.

Once again, the royal sported the Lover’s Knot Tiara, often cited as a favorite of Diana, Princess of Wales, and frequently worn by Kate when in full princess mode. As for her diamond earrings? They previously belonged to Queen Elizabeth II, who received them as a wedding gift from her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Both pieces were designed in the 1910s—the tiara by Garrard, the earrings by Cartier—but Kate, as ever, found a way to make them feel timeless.
