“Oh it’s about to be peak for that Jonas brother,” writer Otegha Uwagba tweeted today. “If a white woman going through a breakup links up with Taylor Swift, your ass is TOAST.” She was referring to this photo of single girls Sophie Turner and Swift walking arm-in-arm while out for dinner in New York, an image fans are interpreting as an explicit endorsement of the Swiftian sisterhood.
Swift has spent the majority of the past week going out for different dinners with different famous friends – among them Selena Gomez, Zöe Kravitz, Greta Gerwig and Blake Lively – wearing an assortment of autumnal boots, minidresses and long-line coats. But it’s the snap with Sophie that is perhaps the most evocative, captured in the aftermath of all the anti-party mum rhetoric that has collected around Turner and Joe Jonas’s impending divorce. (Swift, dedicated fans will know, dated Joe way back when.)
Swift famously mines her (and her friends’) relationship experiences in her songwriting, so who knows if the contents of their chat will end up in a future platinum album? Some might call Sophie’s cropped, sparkly halter-neck an example of the revenge dressing Swift describes in an existing track (“Vigilante Shit”), but Turner and Jonas took care to confirm that their split is a “united decision” in a joint statement after the news broke.
Swift, meanwhile, who split from her long-term boyfriend Joe Alwyn earlier this year, chose a been-there-done-that-weathered-the-storm denim coat and some Reformation knee-high boots – a look that perfectly encapsulates the girl-next-door vibe she’s been working all summer.
