Last night, Taylor Swift tore down the night sky and refashioned it into a cocktail dress. But such is the power of this astronomical musician, who has been credited–in the course of just a few months–with revitalizing institutions like “the cinema” and “the NFL” and “live music.” And so Swift duly celebrated her 34th birthday among a constellation of stars: Blake Lively, Gigi Hadid and Zoë Kravitz.
The metaphor extends to her birthday girl look, which comprised a rhinestoned Clio Peppiatt LBD, a twinkling Aquazzura bag and crystal-trimmed platforms with fistfuls of pavé Messika jewels. At this point, we all understand Swift’s modus operandi: to cherish and revisit the gooey centre of girlhood—all prom queen dresses, kilt skirts and frilly white socks–which also includes the tradition of wearing glittering “I’m a precious star” birthday dresses.
Though Travis Kelce was not in attendance at Manhattan’s Zero Bond restaurant–something about having to train for a football match–Swift was joined by just about every other member of her “squad,” among them Sabrina Carpenter, two thirds of the Haim sisters and Keleigh Teller: all of whom seemed to have been tasked with following an all-black dress code, which would give permission to Swift to shine and outshine. She is, after all, the North Star… “bigger than the whole sky.”
