How One Vogue Editor Is Staying Cool in Silky Separates While WFH

As we continue our social-distancing pledge, the Vogue staff is working from home for the foreseeable future. This article is part of our This Week on Zoom column, where one Vogue editor shares their WFH outfits from the previous workweek—from the waist up, of course.

Enduring a heat wave alone in my Brooklyn apartment isn’t an inspiring situation for getting dressed, let alone putting together fully realized outfits. But as someone who runs freakishly cold, I’ve been relishing not having to sit in the frigid office air and subsequently, slipping into some of my favorite silky pieces. Luxurious-feeling and light as a feather, silks and satins keep me cool and comfortable throughout the day, whether I’m stationary for hours at a time, or venturing out into this strange new world.

Each morning before I sign on for the day, I go on an hour-long sanity walk across my neighborhood and let my mind drift away into an audiobook or podcast. (I’m currently devouring the new season of “You Must Remember This” on the life and career of Polly Platt, which is, in a word, perfect). While wearing a mask is essential, it isn’t exactly pleasant in 90-degree temperatures, so traipsing around in something breezy, like a silky slip dress or a strappy top and slouchy trousers, offers a nice counterbalance.

In the glow of summer, I also love the sheen and dimension of silks and satins. They catch the light beautifully, and as a curly-haired woman, I’ve come to appreciate the contrast between my fuzzy texture and smooth, shiny silk in an opposites attract kind of way. Here, a look at how I worked silk into my WFH wardrobe all week long.

Monday

To quell my Monday blues, I reached for a pick-me-up in the form of this Free People satin midi slip. I love the rich burgundy color and delicate floral embroidery. Whenever I wear this dress, I always make a point of pulling my hair back into an updo to show off the tie strap. This was convenient considering my hair was very dirty. A few mists of Pattern’s Hydrating Mist, piling it on top of my head, and securing into place with a million bobby pins usually does the trick.

Tuesday

I’m far from a lady of leisure, but Olivia Von Halle’s Capability Calypso robe makes me feel like one. Taking advantage of a day without any Zoom meetings, I spent the day lounging — make that hunched over my laptop in the couch — in this silky wrap. After procrastinating for days, I also seized the opportunity to finally wash my hair using my new favorite cleanser, Dizziak’s Hydration Wash. I ran a few squeezes of Briogeo’s Curl Charisma leave-in cream through from mids to ends, and then diffused with Dyson supersonic hairdryer to set my curls for the rest of the week.

Wednesday

These ivory satin trousers are one of my most beloved thrifted finds, and I love pairing them with strappy tops like this ‘90s Scott McClintock bustier, which I scored on eBay recently. The high humidity, teamed with the fact that I haven’t gotten a haircut since January, means my hair is growing bigger by the day. For some relief, I pulled it back into a half-up half-down with my Leonor Greyl claw clip — all the better for sliding on my headphones and my sipping Stumptown cold brew.

Thursday

Sometimes for a change of scenery, I’ll work from my bedroom. I love sinking into my white marshmallow bedding, and tossing notebooks on the leopard ottoman (an impromptu quarantine purchase from The Inside) beside me. As coziness is my top priority, something that feels like daytime pajamas, like this navy silk slip top and merlot paisley print L’Academie midi skirt, is optimal.

Friday

Taking advantage of a relatively cool day (and feeling fully ready for fall), I wore this Other Stories pistachio satin button-down blouse with one of my many, many pairs of Rolla’s East Coast flared cords. I knew it was the perfect day to break in my new Crown Affair silk scrunchie, which I love for pulling back my hair without compromising my curl pattern. I love how it just kind of floats.
