Fashion’s favorites know that you can often find best of the best wardrobe treasures when shopping secondhand. And for many, The RealReal has become a go-to place to do so online, twice daily when new items are uploaded. And so, to celebrate just that and National Consignment Day (a holiday coined by the retailer) The RealReal has brought together a group of fashion muses who are letting you shop their closets on the platform for a limited time. Think: Kate Moss, Veronica Webb, Julianne Moore, Tessa Thompson, Sophia Bush, Laura Harrier, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Meena Harris, Mia Moretti, Ivy Getty, and more.

Between little kitten heels, embellished coats and pretty party dresses you’ll find everything you could dream of–and then some. Meena Harris, the American lawyer, children s book author, and producer is selling some of her favorite shoes for the occasion, for example. “I’m a boot girlie so my absolute favorites are the Saint Laurent suede boots and the Stella McCartney boots,” she tells us. “You’ll notice most of my items are barely worn shoes—I already have big feet, and when I was pregnant with my first daughter, everyone warned me about them growing more. I thought I was in the clear, but it was my second daughter who did me in! Which is to say, I still love all of those shoes, I just can’t fit them.”

Closet sales have become more and more popular over the last few years, but bringing together a tightly curated group, with the added ease of it all being online, makes this a rare opportunity for fashion fans and, in particular, vintage shoppers who love the thrill of finding something that feels unique, and perhaps even nostalgic too. You don’t know what you’re going to find, and the fact that maybe one of your favorite models or actresses wore it makes it feel all the more special. “We’ve been iterating internally on a version of the Consign Commitment for some time, thinking about how to debut the sentiment to our community in the most impactful way,” says Rati Sahi Levesque, president and COO of The RealReal. “Our objective is to encourage consumers to reflect on their wardrobe choices and inspire them to purchase items that endure and appreciate in value over time.”

Scoring the perfect leather jacket from the closet of Kate Moss–or a Celine blazer from Julianne Moore–is literally what fashion dreams are made of. But there’s a bigger idea behind this closet sale too: to bring attention to bettering global consumption behavior. According to the McKinsey Fashion on Climate report, recirculating just one in five items would help put fashion on track to achieve the 1.5-degree pathway laid out by the Paris Climate Accord. And so, in addition to offering up this fun shopping opportunity, The RealReal is also calling on consumers to do just that.

“Since 2017, when we founded ‘National Consignment Day’, October has been our moment to launch some of our biggest partnerships and initiatives with brands like Stella McCartney, Gucci, Burberry, MyTheresa, and Jimmy Choo, for example,” adds Levesque. “This year, we’ve opted to use our platform to issue this powerful call to action to reshape consumer behaviors in the primary market.”

As Harris says, “No single individual can solve the climate crisis alone, but together, we can shift culture and raise awareness about the environmental impact of hyper-consumption–shopping secondhand and supporting initiatives like this one is a great way to do that.” These one-of-one finds won’t last long.
