There’s been a particular penchant among the stars for a kind of shipwrecked chic look—last night at Glamour’s Women of the Year awards 2025, Tyla added a delightful new twist to the trend.
Pirate-forward style has been trending for a while now. Jenna Ortega in a ruffled and sea witchy fall 2025 ready-to-wear Vivienne Westwood gown by Andreas Kronthaler is just one example. On the spring 2026 runways, McQueen was all about the slouchy captain boot and high sea-weathered rococo jackets, and low-slung and metal-detailed balloon pants were runway to walk-the-plank ready at Isabel Marant, and Dior showcased a Captain Hook-like chapeau.
While the trend so far has been dominated by shades of indie sleaze, Tyla has a more fluid and fun take that dredges the seas for some inspo—quite literally. The musician stepped out on the red carpet in London last night (October 30), wearing a bolero jacket made entirely from mussel shells, pulled from George Trochopoulos’s fall 2025 collection. The musician, styled by Ron Hartleben, wore it with nothing underneath, a shredded black knit skirt also by Trochopoulos, strappy black sandals, and gold link drop earrings.
London-based designer Trochopoulos is a celebrity secret weapon, who came up with his striking, spidery knits and found fans from Miley Cyrus to Dua Lipa and Kylie Jenner. He’s evolved his eponymous line with sculptural shapes and avant-garde use of textiles—discarded mussel shells included.
Tyla’s glam followed suit, with an opalescent smoky eye that complemented the shells and a burst of pink blush by Ngozi Edeme (A.K.A. @paintedbyesther). Her deeply side-parted braids, which matched the brilliant movement of the jacket, were styled by Rachael Banjo.
Hartleben has established a rebellious, sexy style lexicon for the “Chanel” singer, kitting the star out in major archival looks from the French house for her music video, from jeweled belts to the iconic hula hoop bag. For her onstage looks, Hartleben has dressed her in fringed zebra ’90s Missoni and ultra-mini Balmains, while red carpet appearances bank on barely there looks from Chloé, Balenciaga, and Chanel.
Tyla, who was being honored as one of Glamour’s Women of the Year alongside Demi Moore and Rachel Zegler, attended the London event with other stars including Adwoa Aboa, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and the Sugababes.
