If you thought last week’s Meet the Parents date night look was difficult—welcome to the ensemble that has to survive one date night, but in multiple locations. Welcome to the “hop stop" date, otherwise known as the endless evening where you have to be in many different locations by your beau’s side: the friend’s birthday dinner, the cocktail meet-up for another friend, and a still another group going out dancing until dawn. And although you are exhausted from a long work week (and would, in all honesty, much rather stay home and watch Netflix)—you are committed to attending every event—as well as committed to your date.
For multiple-stop nights, the most important component starts from the base: the shoes. “Like most real-life occasions, this is not the time for heels,” says Vogue.com Market Editor Chelsea Zalopany. Instead of a vertiginous stiletto, opt for a low flat with an interesting texture or pattern. “Yes, you can take a taxi but you re still on the go and the worst thing is to have a pair of swollen feet on the dance floor while trying to maintain a ‘cool girl’ chagrin.”
Then, choose an unfussy, clean-lined mod dress in a neutral tone, which will give you room to work in a punch of personality in other ways. “Add a coat and bag that are a bit more of a statement. This isn’t the first date look’ where you pare back to basics,” says Zalopany. “But the clever thing about this outfit is that the mod dress is actually quite classically safe. You can wear it anywhere and still look appropriate, while the coat acts as a great layering piece.”
To bring in some more contrast beauty-wise, try a dark lip. “Usually we advise for a fresh face, but this is your night to actually go big if you re hankering for it,” says Zalopany. “A goth, rich lipstick? Go for it! An under-the-eyelid liner? Why not?” And lastly, stay hydrated—after all, it’s going to be a long night.[#image: /photos/589156de97a3db337a249b80]|||date night|||
