The Season 3 Premiere for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Was Just Marvelous

“So how bout that traffic?” joked Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator of the Emmy-collecting comedy: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. At the New York season 3 premiere, Sherman-Palladino (in a Maisel-approved cherry-hued suit) stood next to her husband, director and writer of the series, Daniel Palladino as they introduced the first episode. “We’re extraordinarily proud this season. It feels perfect.”

Perfect indeed, and the cast couldn’t agree more as they arrived in style on the pink carpet outfitted with fuchsia velvet ropes at the Museum of Modern Art. Alex Borstein, who took home an Emmy this year for her role as Susie Myerson, Mrs. Maisel’s wisecracking manager, poetized on what we can expect this season (without revealing too much.) “Characters are growing. It’s like a pebble in a pond—it’s rippling out. As Midge’s world expands, as Susie’s role expands, we get to meet all these different characters. There’s so many colors in the show. I think it’s just getting richer and larger.”

Jane Lynch, who plays the villainess Sophie Lennon, a rival comedienne to Midge with a secret fondness for the finer things in life, kept mum: “Sophie goes out on a limb creatively, I will say that.” In an emerald J. Mendel number, Marin Hinkle (who plays Midge’s passionately polite mother) gave Vogue one clue, “I will say the travels the characters get to take will not disappoint!” Will we get to see Rose in Paris, part deux?

One thing is for certain, the candy-color world of Maisel will be filled with oodles of confectionary fashions. Leroy McClain who plays heartthrob crooner, Shy Baldwin, mused over the show’s vintage wears. “The clothes, I mean come on! The suits that Shy gets to wear are absolutely amazing. I think it’s worth the price of admission alone!” He’s not wrong.

One character we haven’t met yet: Mei, played by Stephanie Hsu. When Vogue asked for any hints, Hsu was careful not to say too much, “She is...a tough broad.” After the night’s sneak peek, I can confirm Hsu is very much correct in her assessment. And one character we have met, many times over, Mrs. Maisel, played by Rachel Brosnahan arrived in a sparkling pink suit, arm-and-arm with the designer, Christian Siriano. The gang was all there.

Post-screening, the cast and guests moseyed on down to the Plaza for the after-party where more fun was to be had. Michael Zegen, who plays love-him-or-hate-him Joel Maisel (although Zegen promises we’ll be warming up to him more this season), swears the onscreen chemistry with the cast is real—they truly are all friends. “I love these people. It’s the best cast I’ve ever worked with.”
