Besides maybe menswear stripes, print is a word that doesn’t apply to many things in a minimalist’s wardrobe. However, after a season of expressively joyous, reemergence-ready fashion, perhaps even the most die-hard of minimalists might crave celebrating (and wearing) a bolder version of their own personal style this summer.
That being said, you don’t have to go the route of loud brights or overly busy prints to embrace this season’s mood; there are a handful of printed pieces that still feel low-key. There’s also a few key tips to keep in mind when straying from your sartorially all-solid wardrobe; such as choosing a subtle neutral or monochrome color palette for the print, sticking to familiar silhouettes you love wearing like relaxed collared shirts, or using a minimalist print to imitate adding a bit of texture into a tonal look.
For the extremely print-averse, there are prints so micro, you might need to squint to see them, like Tove’s itty bitty polka-dot top—a true barely there print. You can also look to brands you already love to wear, chances are, their prints were designed with the rest of their pieces in mind, and can be seamlessly integrated into your existing wardrobe. A few good examples of this are from brands like Tôteme, Khaite, and Cos, which have added a small amount of print into their spring collections, but use sharp and thoughtful design elements and neutral colors while doing so.
