At 60, Sarah Jessica Parker Is Still At the Top of Her Style Game
Between Sex and the City and And Just Like That, Sarah Jessica Parker can’t help but be forever associated with Carrie Bradshaw—her stylish, Manolo Blahnik-wearing character on the two hit shows. But that doesn’t mean that the actor—who celebrates her 60th birthday today—isn’t a fashion icon in her own right. Off-screen, Parker has cultivated a unique sense of style that still puts her in a fashion league of her own. And at 60, she remains at the top of her style game.
Recently, Parker’s red carpet arrivals have proven that the star can easily rival Carrie in looks that are super polished and sophisticated. Unlike Carrie’s penchant for risk-taking (remember when she wore a belt overtop a bare midriff?) Parker’s sensibility leans more classic and refined. Though, that’s not to say she isn’t afraid to make a statement, either. At the 2024 Met Gala, for one, Parker hit the Met steps in an ornate full-skirted Richard Quinn design, complete with a shapely Philip Treacy headpiece. It was the perfect balance of classic and contemporary.
There’s always a sense of playfulness to Parker’s looks; You can tell she’s someone who loves dressing up as a form of self-expression, but doesn’t take it too seriously. At the New York City Ballet’s fall gala last year, Parker emerged in a metallic-silver floral gown by Oscar de la Renta. In her rule book, fashion should be fun. Even her more demure looks shine. She will sport a subdued black or gray skirt suit, but amp it up with sparkly heels or a Gucci It bag.
As fun as Parker’s red carpet looks are, they re often meaningful, too. Take her striking look at the 2022 Met Gala, which revolved around an American fashion theme: The star partnered with Christopher John Rogers on a full-skirted ball gown that paid homage to Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley, an unsung designer who made history as the first Black female fashion designer in the White House.
So, sure, Carrie Bradshaw may be forever associated with a serious penchant for style—but in our books, Parker is the real enduring fashion star here. And her wardrobe only seems to be getting better every year. The big question is: What fabulous ensembles will she break out in the year ahead? Judging by her chic history on the step and repeats, we know one thing for certain: They’ll be good.
