Sophie Green and Matt Kliegman s Canadian Farm Wedding

My friend Elena Mari, who does the art direction for Greenhouse—my juice company in Toronto—hand-drew the invitations. I wanted them to be simple and beautiful. This is a view from the back of my parents' house outside of Toronto. Each and every tree was planted by my family. The small cabin is our sauna. Matt and I didn’t want to see one another before the wedding, so he got dressed in a separate house on the property. Here he is putting on his light-blue knit Hermès tie. He was adamant about not cutting his beard but did pull his hair back into a bun before the ceremony. I think it is really important at weddings for guests to eat and have a drink upon arrival. This is where they entered and noshed on passed hors d’oeuvres before being ushered to the ceremony. It was pretty surreal to exit my family’s house and walk toward 200 of our closest friends and family—a moment I’ll never forget. I met my parents at the pond, and the two escorted me down the aisle. Guests sat on benches with linen cushions that matched the waitstaff’s aprons and the tablecloths. We designed a simple program that included the English translation to the Hebrew song “Under the Sky," sung at the wedding by Lee Reit. We were able to have a couple moments to ourselves after the ceremony to process everything and enjoy one another’s company. Crown Flora Studio created my beautiful bouquet of garden roses. Later that night, I climbed to the top of a ladder in the barn and tossed it out into the crowd, which was caught by our friend Sara Moonves. I love this picture. Matt and I got married under the most beautiful tree, and here you can really appreciate its size. The light at this time of day was just perfect. I love the way my Cortana dress (which I found at Stone Fox Bride) flowed at the back with all the varied layers. I had the tailor leave a raw edge at the bottom. This created a unique effect, but after almost twelve hours of being in the dress (and dancing my face off), it looked like the entire bottom had been dip-dyed in brown ink with sticks, branches, and clumps of grass woven throughout. I always liked the look of a veil so I had a beautiful one made by Stone Fox Bride that matched the silk in my dress. And, I loved Matt’s suit. It was a blue suit from Prada that fit him perfectly. Matt and I sharing an intimate moment before the festivities really got going. My dad really enjoyed getting the property ready for the wedding. He came across this incredible tepee from Oregon which ended up being a great addition to the celebration. In fact around 4:00 a.m., I walked in on some friends having a jam session around a small fire pit. My mom enjoyed decorating the inside of the tepee with some Roots pillows and blankets, musical instruments, and some tree stumps for seating. Seating cards were hung between two 50-foot poplar trees, which coincidentally shed their seeds during the ceremony to create a magical “summer snow” effect as we walked down the aisle. Instead of using flowers, Crown Flora Studio created these incredible “table-scapes” using all green plants (moss, ferns etc.), which blended in perfectly with the farm’s setting. When the guests arrived in their seats, large platters of crudités were set in front of them as part of the centerpieces but also for the guests to pick at. Placed inside the napkins were hand-written notes I wrote to each guest thanking them for being there with us to celebrate. Everything was served family-style, except for the salad course. We wanted the food to feel homegrown, as if things were picked fresh from the garden. Much of the produce actually did come from local farms. Our photographer, Nate Legiehn, captured a nice moment of us enjoying the speeches. I have to say, the food was pretty unreal! For the main course, each guest received a plate of quinoa, heirloom tomato and mozzarella salad, and green beans while the meat and fish were grilled over wood adjacent to the tent. Waiters then brought large platters of lamb chops, chicken, and salmon. Holding hands, listening to the speeches surrounded by all of our friends. Frangipane Patisserie in Toronto baked us a beautiful and seriously delicious carrot cake! The cake was served with a scoop of Gelato Fresco ice cream along with cookies, chocolates, and fresh wild strawberries placed in the center of the tables. Just before we cut the cake, Matt and I each made a speech to thank all of our guests and especially our parents for making the night so magical. Guests enjoying dinner. As the sun went down, the candles in the tent created a beautiful glow and made it feel very intimate. A lovely view of the tent as the sun set and the candlelight reflected picturesquely on the pond. Our first dance was to the New Basement Tapes’ “When I Get My Hands on You.” The song is beautiful and Bob Dylan’s lyrics definitely resonated with us—“When I get my hands on you, gonna make you marry me. And now you know, everywhere on Earth you go, you’re gonna have me as your man.” We converted the barn into a nightclub, decking it out with lights and a great sound system. We created specialty cocktails for the evening and had Gelato Fresco make espresso granita that we paired with tequila to kick the party into high gear. Matt and I getting tossed around during the hora. Friends hanging out around the bonfire outside. My dad built this wood platform tent as our honeymoon suite. The sun was rising over the pond when we finally made it to bed, but it was so peaceful waking up there in the morning to the sound of chirping birds. The lighting in the bar trumped many New York City nightclubs and as a result the party raged until 4:30 a.m.
