The Runways Have Spoken: Space-Dyed Knits Are the Coolest Way to Stay Warm

There are always macro-trends to grace the spring runways—mini hemlines, cutouts, and cheery colors. But it’s micro-trends that set each season, and year, apart. For spring 2022, we’re seeing low-rise pants, but even fresher is the presence of the space-dyed knit.
It’s a technique in which a single yarn is dyed with two or more colors that repeat themselves throughout the length of the yarn. Depending on how many colors are used, the resulting space dye can look quite different.
The appearance of this knit trend (tie-dye for knitwear, if you will) proves the old adage that great minds think alike; this fashion month Eckhaus Latta, Jonathan Simkhai, Bevza, Missoni, and Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini were among the brands that leaned into space-dyed knits for their collections. While their appropriation runs the gamut from pullovers to dresses, it’s unanimous that each look is as cool as it is warm.
