While the tie-dye technique has been around for decades, the ’60s-inspired print resurfaced in the spring 2019 season and has since maintained its in-demand status with both designers and the fashion crowd. The graphic swirl has officially earned its place as a staple print during the warm weather seasons, synonymous with summer, much like floral and gingham.
We’ve seen tie-dye grace everyday wardrobe items like T-shirts, calf socks, and sweatshirts a plenty, but the groovy swirls, dips, and dyes have now entered the market in a more sophisticated silhouette—enter, the tie-dye dress.
Designers like Gabriela Hearst, Proenza Schouler, Alberta Ferretti, and even Oscar de la Renta have embraced the psychedelic print in both vibrant and neutral colors; each has applied their own take, or might we say, “spin” on the textile treatment. You can find an easy-going tie-dye dress in a handful of the season’s must-have silhouettes, from slips to shirt dresses, puff-sleeve midis to sleeveless sundresses, and tiered tanks, too. All feel in sync with summer’s carefree and laid-back attitude. A tie-dye dress not only celebrates color and the pleasures they bring but adds a swirl of joy to the summertime wardrobe essential.
