Initially, the hope was to have both Lena and Mark’s immediate families there, but that soon became another impossibility as they all needed to travel from in and out of state. “In the end, it was just us and both of our parents there in person,” Lena says. “Our officiant, wedding party, and family were all in attendance via Zoom.” The ceremony was kept fairly short and sweet, so as not to make the service next April feel repetitive. There were some technical issues with the Zoom component at first (Lena recommends doing an audio test-run), but they were able to adjust mid-ceremony. Ultimately, the digital medium had its benefits: “We were able to feel very relaxed during the ceremony because of how low-key it was,” Lena says. “Not having 200+ people there watching in person also made it less nerve-wracking.”

Afterward, they were surprised by neighbors with signs, confetti, and noise makers at the end of the driveway. “We were not expecting this!” Lena remembers. “And it ended up being one of our favorite parts of the day. Some of our good friends even came bearing a huge pack of toilet paper as a gift.”

After that, each of their parents made toasts, while guests were still looking on via Zoom. “This was probably the highlight of the day, because we were able to actually see who had dialed in and interact with everyone virtually,” Lena says. “It was great to see all of the creative outfits that people were wearing—lots of people only dressed up from the waist up. There was an old prom dress, and even a bathrobe. We ended the day by eating pizza from one of our favorite local restaurants and a wedding cake that my mom made! Overall, we were so pleased with how the day turned out. We couldn’t believe how special and fun it ended up being. There was something really nice about being able to really simplify and focus on the things that matter most.”
