Last Week, Stars Went Alterna-Chic

Leave the classics in the closet! Inspired by runway innovators, the world’s most stylish sought out alterna-chic gowns and off-beat suits for late-fall red carpets. At the CVFF awards, mom-to-be Ashley Graham turned heads in a custom body-con number from Christopher John Rogers, the night’s big winner. Her iridescent “wiggle” dress was as far from traditional maternity wear as it gets. More breathtaking and bold looks from the night? Bella Hadid in an Alexander Wang catsuit with built-in nipple rings, and Paloma Elsesser in JW Anderson’s draped and jeweled silk ensemble.
Elsewhere, the sense of fashion as both directional and fun was the new normal—and how wonderful is that? Queen and Slim director Melina Matsoukas combined a crystal-embellished Wales Bonner blazer and Marine Serre logo’d moon tights for WSJ Magazine’s Innovators Awards, while Gigi Hadid’s ice blue Burberry look at the same event provided a chic, serene moment. Even Cynthia Erivo’s oomph-y pastel Versace gown for the Hollywood Film Awards seemed somehow more radical than ever thanks to the actor’s crown of golden hair spikes.
