My husband and I live in an 1893 farmhouse in Delhi—a small town in the Western Catskills that’s about three hours from the city and Bovina/Andes adjacent. Here’s the thing about upstate New York: every season has its merits—some more than others (looking at you winter, looking at you)—and fall just so happens to be a really great time to lap up so much of what the area has to offer. There’s farmers markets and hikes, apple picking and gourd collecting, plus a handful of really terrific places to grab a bite, which is basically how we spent the last weekend. What follows is a diary of sorts.

The local farmers market is a veritable cornucopia of fresh seasonal ingredients from local farms. On the nights we’re not eating frozen pizza I like to pretend like we’re hosting people and deck out our backyard table accordingly, it makes dinner feel like an honest-to-goodness occasion, which is nice. The tablecloth (and the dress above) is Heather Taylor Home x Dôen.

Russell’s General Store in Bovina serves up what just might be the best breakfast sandwich this side of the Hudson. Unfussy and downright glorious in its simplicity—two eggs, cheddar and bacon casually sandwiched between two slices of airy-yet-crispy brioche. Best followed by a slice of pie from Magpies on Pink Street and a cup of coffee.

Housed in a former barber shop on Main Street in Delhi, Andrea Sanders’s jewel box of a shop, The Stonehouse, is chockablock with handcrafted goods from makers and artisans both local and far-flung (yes, you need that little nail brush and probably that candle too).

Tivoli General is a good hour and a half plus away from us on the other side of the Hudson but their fresh baked bialys and bagels (as well as their well-stocked general store) are so, so worth it.

Roadside boiled peanuts, chili cheese waffle fries (plus a caviar option that thoroughly scratches whatever low-high itch you may or may not have), and a fried chicken sandwich worth writing home about: These are just a few of the highlights of the new menu under the Andes Hotel’s new ownership. We’ll be enjoying aforementioned bites at a picnic table by one of the many fire pits until the first snow.

There’s no shortage of hikes and nature walks up here. This one is just seven minutes from our house and one of our favorites.

If you head upstate between the months of September and November you are actually required to pick apples and visit at least one pumpkin patch. Sorry, rules are rules. Consider visiting Mead Orchards in Tivoli—beautiful and quiet (a rarity), or Rose Hill Farm in Red Hook where you can grab a glass of “Kitchen Sink,” a pet-nat wild fermented dry cider, one of three available on draft.

Weekends have lately meant working on promoting my first book—a collection of upstate interiors including our own, pictured below. Here’s a little peek at “Upstate: Living Spaces With Space To Live,” set to hit bookstores on October 27th.
