In search of an elegant chaise lounge or a rare set of china? A weekend trip to the best antique stores in upstate New York is the answer to all of your treasure-hunting prayers. Stocked with gems of all varieties, from acclaimed shops to giant warehouses filled with architectural salvage, there is something for every interior style and budget.

The geography of ‘upstate’ is fairly vast, spanning from the Hudson Valley and Catskills all the way to the Finger Lakes and Adirondacks. If you’re heading to the Hudson Valley, make its namesake town your first stop. “Hudson is rich in history, architecture, and design, attracting old souls who appreciate beautiful things,” says Anthony D’Argenzio, founder and associate real estate broker of This Old Hudson. While in town, you can expect a mix of antiques. “Classic Hudson Valley style is early American, Federal, primitive farmhouses, and Second Empire. Many antiques came from the old homes, mostly between the 1750s and 1900s,” D’Argenzio says.

And while there is a surplus of online auctions and resale sites moving antiques to platforms like 1stDibs and Chairish, nothing beats the thrill of searching a brick-and-mortar shop. “Personally, I still prefer sourcing in person. It’s more about the hunt, the experience of touch, and spontaneity,” D’Argenzio says.

Before setting out on your expedition, there are some tricks of the trade to keep in mind. As a rule of thumb, always bring cash, and don’t be afraid to negotiate (tip: group a few items together and offer a price for them all—dealers like to move product). Always go with an idea of what you’d like to find, and specific measurements if necessary. Test out each item before you buy it. Are the sofa legs sturdy? Does the lamp work? Is the chair comfortable? “It’s also important to consider how much space you have in your car and if the vendors offer delivery,” D’Argenzio notes. Finally, if you see a yard sale sign, you must swing by, as they often have the best deals.
