2023 in 11 Celebrity Weddings

In 2023, one celebrity wedding in particular took over bridal Pinterest boards and “WedTok”: the elaborate three-day celebration staged by Sofia Richie and Elliot Grainge at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in the French Riviera, which kicked off many a bridal trend. Even the tinted lip balm Sofia wore caused a shopping frenzy (it was Chanel Rouge Coco Baume, for those interested).

But not all high-profile nuptials this year involved three Chanel haute couture looks, elaborate arches of white roses, or live performances by rockstar relatives. We’ve also seen more intimate, low-key celebrations from the stars: both Kat Dennings and Michelle Yeoh had private ceremonies attended by a small circle of loved ones, without any of the usual fanfare associated with a celebrity wedding. (Dennings even made her own floral arch as the backdrop for sharing vows.)

There was no shortage of incredible bridal fashion moments, from the crystal-encrusted bespoke Miu Miu dress The Morning Show star Bel Powley wore for her wedding in Richmond, to the vintage-inspired looks actor Beanie Feldstein and producer Bonnie-Chance Roberts designed in collaboration with Gucci. When model Anna Cleveland and Dazed Media co-founder Jefferson Hack exchanged vows, the guest list read like a who’s who of the fashion industry.

Below, revisit 11 of the most memorable celebrity weddings in 2023.

Sofia Richie, the model and youngest child of legendary singer Lionel Richie, married Elliot Grainge, a music executive and founder of 10K Projects, in April 2023 at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes. The bride wore not one but three dresses crafted in the Chanel couture ateliers in Paris. For the rehearsal dinner, she wore a hand-beaded sleeved dress which was a recreation of a look Stella Tennant originally wore in Chanel’s fall 1997 couture show, while her party dress was a recreation of a white mini originally worn by supermodel Claudia Schiffer on the runway in the ’90s. Of the main event, Sofia told Vogue: “At my first fitting at the Chanel salons in Paris, I immediately envisioned the dress I wanted to get married in: a beautiful lace-embroidered halter gown with a long train. Within the dress are subtle details, including an embroidered heart to represent the love that Elliot and I share.” The walk down the aisle was seven-and-a-half minutes long, and Sofia revealed her father managed to calm her nerves by chatting the whole way, as Stephen Sanchez performed her favorite song, “Until I Found You” (a surprise arranged by her now husband).

In May, Olympic medalist Simone Biles and NFL player Jonathan Owens wed at Nobu Cabo, Mexico, in front of 144 guests. “I actually got a dress that I originally said I wouldn’t like,” Biles said of her Galia Lahav gown, which featured a delicate lace corset, explaining that she followed her “gut feeling” about what to ultimately go with. “Whales were jumping out of the water as our ceremony started,” Simone told Vogue of the wedding, which the couple had planned to feel as relaxed as possible. “Whale season is over by the way. It sprinkled for two minutes after we got married—which is good luck!—and we had a full moon. It was truly the most magical!”

Rita Ora and Taika Waititi got married in 2022, however they only shared their wedding photographs with the world on their first anniversary.

Rita Ora and Taika Waititi got married in August 2022, but they waited until 2023 to share their wedding photographs with the world via Vogue on their first wedding anniversary, so they are being included here. There were plenty of rumors about the details of their wedding day, however no one would have guessed just how intimate it was: they got married at their home in Los Angeles in front of a small group of around eight friends. The bride wore a Tom Ford dress which she purchased just before their last-minute ceremony at the store in Los Angeles. “[Tom] is now one of my close friends, and I adore and admire him so much. To get married in his dress was a dream come true,” said the bride. After the ceremony, they went to a friend’s house for dinner, where they were surprised by an Elvis impersonator and danced until the early hours.

Model Barbara Sprouse, née Palvin, and actor Dylan Sprouse married on 15 July in her native Hungary at her parents’ home (which often serves as a wedding venue), ahead of a second ceremony in California. Barbara wore a strapless Vivienne Westwood corset gown with a Tiffany Co. choker and long organza gloves, and then changed into a shorter dress with a criss-cross back by Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini. “There is also a Hungarian tradition where you have to wear a red dress after midnight—it’s called menyecske ruha,” the bride explained. “There was no question—I had to wear a Hungarian designer for this one, so I chose MERO. They created the dress of my dreams, it was sexy and sweet but also comfortable—exactly what I wanted.” In a sentimental touch, the couple exchanged vows in the same church in Albertirsa where Barbara’s parents got married 34 years earlier.

Actor Beanie Feldstein and producer Bonnie-Chance Roberts got married on 19 May 2023 in front of a lake under a canopy of trees at Cedar Lakes Estate in the Hudson Valley, which they call their “happy place together”. “Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined that we would wear Gucci to our wedding,” Beanie told Vogue at the time of their fashion choices for their summer camp-themed celebration. Beanie’s dress had beautiful vintage-inspired lace sleeves and a crystal bow detail on the neckline. “The thing that absolutely blows me away about the dress is that it is simultaneously incredibly vintage feeling, it almost feels like they took a dress from a hundred years ago and restored it, and also remarkably modern and fresh,” she said. Bonnie-Chance, meanwhile, wore a pink tuxedo (also by Gucci) which was inspired by a photograph of Julia Roberts.

Kat Dennings and Andrew W.K.

For Two Broke Girls actor Kat Dennings’s wedding to singer, songwriter, and performance artist Andrew W.K., the couple decided to keep things low-key, opting to celebrate their nuptials in their own back garden in Los Angeles with just a handful of friends and family, including actors Brenda Song and Macaulay Culkin. “I wanted our wedding to feel completely different from an ‘industry event’ in every way,” says the bride, who threw herself into DIY ahead of the event. “I even handmade all of our wedding florals, aisle pieces, and our ceremony arch, which took three entire days. I wanted to be hands-on with the entire experience and feel like we had built our moment together from scratch.” For her big day, Dennings wore an ethereal vintage Alexander McQueen gown in white lace, as sumptuous as it was subdued.

Anna Cleveland and Jefferson Hack married on 15 July at Oakley Court, a dramatic Victorian Gothic country hotel less than an hour outside of London. The bride commissioned Lavinia Biagiotti—the second-generation Italian designer who once served as a babysitter while Anna’s mother, Pat, was walking the runways for Lavinia’s mother, Laura—to design her lace gown with a classic boat neck and a dramatic train. She added drama with a Bulgari Serpenti necklace (a symbol of metamorphosis and a new chapter), while Jefferson wore a baby-blue double-breasted suit by Kim Jones for Dior. Some of the biggest names in British fashion were in attendance, including Jefferson’s former partner Kate Moss and their daughter Lila, Tilda Swinton, Nick Knight, Daphne Guinness, Juergen Teller, Andreas Kronthaler, Bella Freud, and many others. There were lots of sweet touches to this English countryside wedding, such as displays of wild cornflowers, peonies, and jasmine plucked from the hotel grounds and an organist playing “God Only Knows”.

Actors Bel Powley and Douglas Booth got married under a chuppah made from red and pink dahlias in one of the greenhouses at Petersham Nurseries in Richmond on October 28. Their best friend Alice married them in a pink Bode suit at the informal and personal ceremony. After the lunch and speeches at Petersham, the wedding party and guests boarded buses bound for the Institute of Contemporary Arts in central London for a big dance party. Powley worked with her stylist Cher Coulter and Miu Miu on her custom wedding gown, which was embellished with hundreds of beautiful crystals and organza flowers and had thin straps, a square neckline, and a wide full ankle-length skirt. “I’d just never seen a wedding dress like it, and it felt utterly me,” Bel told Vogue. “My mum, Cher, and I flew over to Milan for my fitting and had one of the most joyous trips of our lives that I will never forget.”

Fashion photographer Nadine Ijewere and her partner James Gilbert had a destination wedding at Castell de Sant Marçal in Barcelona, attended by many of their close friends from the fashion industry, including Vogue’s Kate Phelan and Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, and model Adwoa Aboah. “I actually ended up going with the first dress I saw when I walked into my very first showroom appointment,” Nadine told Vogue of how she chose her Vivienne Westwood tiered gown. “I tried on lots of others, including those classic off-the-shoulder Westwood silhouettes, but they didn’t feel like me. I’m not a slinky bride—I’ve always loved volume and shape. But at the same time, I didn’t want an ’80s meringue. This gown felt like a princess moment without being too princess-y or OTT.” Her hairstylist Ali Pirzadeh created her Sade-inspired braid with pearl and ribbon accents. “I wanted to keep the hair clean, because the look was all about the dress. I think it felt quite Spanish overall,” Nadine explains.

Actors Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup, both 54, married in a courthouse in Manhattan in June 2023 in front of a handful of friends, including actor Mark Ruffalo and his wife Sunrise Coigney. Naomi’s stylist Jeanann Williams helped her to find her exquisite Oscar de la Renta lace dress, which had a fitted bodice and an A-line skirt. She completed the look with a modest bouquet of seasonal white flowers and greenery (which she explained on Instagram were “deli flowers”), a delicate sparkling tennis necklace, and a pair of white sunglasses. Later that weekend, she was photographed wearing a white lace Oscar de la Renta blouse with jeans, continuing the bridal mood.

Michelle Yeoh and Jean Todt

The Oscar-winning actor Michelle Yeoh and her long-time fiancé Jean Todt got married on 27 July in Geneva, Switzerland, after being together for two decades. “Today, after 6,992 days, on 27th July 2023 in Geneva, surrounded by loving family and friends, we are so happy to celebrate this special moment together!” a program for the ceremony, which was shared on Instagram, read. The couple kept details of their intimate ceremony very private, but did share a handful of photographs in which Yeoh wore a nude lace dress with a silk bodice and a white silk button-down with a matching ivory tiered skirt.
