There have been some surprising choices in celebrity footwear this year, from Victoria Beckham’s MSCHF X Croc boots and Emma Watson’s Loewe Toy pumps, to Rihanna’s “naked” Alaïa mesh flats. Dua Lipa famously loves an off-kilter shoe–like Maison Margiela’s Tabi Mary-Janes–so she caught everyone off guard by choosing a stone cold shoe classic for her most recent outing. As 2023–year of the wrong shoe–draws to a close, classic footwear might just be the most unconventional fashion statement a star could make.

During an outing in New York City this week, the “Houdini” singer was spotted in her signature off-duty style. She wore a pair of low-rise blue jeans, a black leather zip-up biker jacket that exposed her midriff, statement silver earrings and a black leather cross-body bag adorned with chain details. The twist? Her footwear: a pair of iconic black and white Chanel sling-back pumps, a timeless investment for the fashion-conscious.

First introduced by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel in 1957, the two-tone, sling-back pumps, a collaboration with French footwear expert Massaro, have since been reimagined by the late Karl Lagerfeld and by Virginie Viard, with Lagerfeld introducing the flat ballerina style in 1984. This year, the classic shoe made a comeback as a summer must-have, gracing the feet of stars like Lily-Rose Depp, Kylie Jenner and Rihanna. Now, Dua Lipa proves that they work for winter, too.
