In Ed Sheeran’s new music video for A Little More, the English singer attracts a creepy stalker—played by none other than actor Rupert Grint. It’s a sequel of sorts, given the Harry Potter star also starred in Sheeran’s 2011 music video for Lego House. “For a long time, I wanted to make another music video with Rupert, but I was waiting for the right time and concept,” Sheeran tells Vogue. “I thought how funny it’d be to have him in this video, surrounded by all different versions of me—in character—and to see his head spinning.”
Such is the plot of the new video: Grint plays a recovering Sheeran stalker, who is haunted by images of the star wherever he goes. The singer pops up in his twisted mind as a security guard, dog walker, even as a bride-to-be. “I wanted the video to be pure chaos, and humorous—a bit like the Lego House video, but we brought in the chaos from the get-go,” says Sheeran.
The concept demanded a lot of costumes, of course—in fact, over 250 different outfit changes are featured in the video. The pieces were all sustainably sourced from secondhand shops or resale platforms like eBay. “I didn’t want to be wasteful, especially as there were so many looks to get through,” says Sheeran of the wardrobe approach. “There are so many interesting clothes already out there, so it made sense to source them in this way.”
Sheeran truly sports it all throughout the video, from wacky Hawaiian shirts to sleek tweed suits. The many costume changes resulted in a lengthier shoot than usual. “It took about a week to film, which is quite a long time in video terms,” says Sheeran. “It was fun wearing all the looks; I found it really freeing!” Not to be missed? When Sheeran plays multiple guests at a wedding, wearing formal dresses, fascinators, and yes, even a full-on white wedding dress. “I liked wearing the wedding dress,” says Sheeran. “We had fun filming that scene. It’ll probably be the first and last time I’ll ever wear one.” (Never say never, Ed.)
As enjoyable as playing dress-up was, “I loved seeing Rupert,” Sheeran says of his mini reunion with Grint. “I hadn’t seen him since we filmed Lego House, it’d been a long time. He came to stay at [my house] with his family for three days. His daughter is the same age as one of my daughters, and they get on so well—it was so lovely.”
Up next? Sheeran is gearing up to release his eight studio album, Play, on September 12. Set those Spotify reminders, folks. “I’ll be touring and releasing my new album,” Sheeran says. “Then, Christmas!” Christmas talk in August? We can already picture Mariah Carey defrosting.
