Before I begin, I feel I should make one thing clear: Eddie Redmayne has always been very stylish. Yet, while the actor evidently knows his way around a slick awards ceremony tuxedo or a louche double-breasted linen suit, since stepping out in support of his latest project—the Netflix crime drama The Good Nurse co-starring Jessica Chastain—Redmayne has been subtly adding a few new twists to his sartorial repertoire. At 40, it would be understandable if Redmayne wanted to offset his still-boyish handsomeness with something more serious or stuffy—but instead, it seems he’s feeling more playful with his style than ever.

Enlisting the help of Harry Lambert—the stylist most famous for his work with Harry Styles, but whose eclectic, offbeat tastes have seen him deliver showstopping red carpet moments for the likes of Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor, too—Redmayne has recently stepped things up a notch.

Our first clue that Redmayne was exploring new territory came when he attended the New York premiere of The Good Nurse wearing a deconstructed Maison Margiela Couture suit featuring raw hems, exposed stitches, and detached panels, like a Savile Row classic turned inside out. As far as red carpet men’s dressing goes—especially for a star like Redmayne, whose previous appearances at the biggest awards ceremonies have seen him typically opt for a more conventional black tie route—it was a statement as fashion-forward as it was, well, fun.

And Redmayne didn’t stop there. An appearance at the Mill Valley Film Festival in California the week before last he sported a sharp Dries van Noten suit in a nailhead check with exaggerated lapels and a giant velvet Gucci bow tie for a finishing touch of ’70s-inspired glamour. Attending the Savannah Film Festival last weekend, he stepped out in a tan Marni suit, worn with a hot crimson Séfr shirt that featured an ever-so-slightly-seedy oversized collar. And at the Montclair Film Festival in New Jersey, also last weekend, he went for a more minimal collarless blazer and tailored pants from Celine in a subdued pinstripe with a black mock neck sweater underneath.

Neither has Redmayne’s current style streak been limited to just tailoring. Showing up to a Q&A event last week he wore the fuzzy Loewe knit of dreams, made from faux shearling and featuring a dizzying array of colorful stripes, while another highlight came on Monday, as he attended a screening at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation in New York wearing a charming S.S. Daley cardigan featuring—what else?—a pair of blue ducks. With The Good Nurse, Redmayne may be taking on one of his most serious roles yet, but if his style is anything to go by, he’s having an enormous amount of fun while promoting it.
