A question I’ve taken to asking myself as I pick out my outfit for the day: WWJD? That is: What would Jennifer do?
While Jennifer Lawrence has always been one to watch on the red carpet, the actor’s street style is where she shines the brightest. Over the last few years, Lawrence has ascended from a well-dressed city slicker to a bona fide risk-taker without totally overhauling her wardrobe. Her bold, off-duty choices have made her an exciting dresser—one who has influenced how I think about clothing.
Like Lawrence, I have a penchant for basics: white tees, slouchy jeans, pull-on trousers, slim Adidas sneakers, and ballet flats. But sometimes I feel uninspired, stuck in a rut with my staples. However, after years of paying keen attention to Lawrence’s street style, I’ve picked up a few tricks and made meaningful changes to my style without buying anything new.
Here, three fashion lessons I’ve learned from Jennifer Lawrence in 2025.
1. Layer Up
On multiple occasions this past summer, Lawrence tried out a funky layering trick, likely borrowed from The Row’s spring 2025 look book. She layered a lace-trimmed, off-white mini slip dress underneath oversized tees and atop colorful trousers and longer skirts alike. While perhaps she wouldn’t be able to wear the slip by itself, it made for a piece of visual intrigue, breaking up outfits with a pop of lace. I’ve added the trick into my own wardrobe by wearing a tiered lace tank beneath sweaters and over trousers, adding a touch of whimsy to an otherwise simple look.
2. Elevate the Basics
Black and white might have a reputation for being basic—or even boring—but Lawrence reminded us that what an outfit lacks in color, it can make up for in other areas. Take the oversized white tee and sculptural black miniskirt from Lii she wore in November while promoting her film Die My Love. Extra points for her accessories: Heaps of anklets and toe rings add a touch of fun. I take a cue from her and pair my white tees with an architectural Entire Studios maxiskirt for the same effect.
3. Lighten Up a Little!
Fashion can feel so serious sometimes. This year Lawrence reminded us on several occasions that a little levity goes a long way. Take the silly Breaking Dawn baseball cap she paired with her deadly cool Kallmeyer jacket, or the whimsical Dior book tote she styled with simple jeans and a tee. I like to throw on my Dogue baseball cap for a little touch of silliness.
