All’s fair in love and archival couture, so says Kim Kardashian.
Kardashian stepped out last night following the Paris premiere of her forthcoming Hulu TV series, All’s Fair, to celebrate her 45th birthday. Photographed hitting the city’s infamous Crazy Horse cabaret club, the birthday girl swapped her blue vintage Dior gown for another piece of fashion history; Kardashian opted for Look 28 from Alexander McQueen’s summer 1997 Givenchy couture collection.
The look, from the “Search for the Golden Fleece” show, featured a carved molten gold corset with an asymmetric bust, a gathered white tulle skirt, and an arpeggiated train. Paired simply with barely there gold stilettos, Kardashian wore her hair in a tight bun with a slicked down middle part and bronzed glam.
It’s no wonder Kardashian was so enamored by McQueen’s Givenchy collection that she had to pull the look for her birthday night out. It was McQueen’s debut for the storied French house, where the renegade Brit was inspired by Greek mythology, outfitting a cast of femme fatale models in gilded corsetry and dramatic silhouettes that spanned goddess-like draping and more militaristic figures. Look 28 was also worn by a young Naomi Campbell. As a lover of sculptural lines and sartorial drama, Kardashian finds a kinship.
Earlier in the evening, the Skims founder, budding lawyer, and actor joined the rest of the cast—Glenn Close, Sarah Paulson, Teyana Taylor, Niecy Nash-Betts, and Naomi Watts—on the red carpet, wearing an icy blue, body-hugging gown from Christian Dior’s spring 2000 collection by John Galliano. Her co-stars all took drastically different approaches to their own outfits.
All’s Fair, created and directed by Ryan Murphy, is a buzzy courtroom drama that sees Kardashian play Allura Grant on a team of female divorce lawyers who leave their male-dominated firm to go out on their own and create a powerhouse practice.
“They navigate high-stakes breakups, scandalous secrets and shifting allegiances—both in the courtroom and within their own ranks,” a synopsis says. In the trailer, we see Kardashian as Grant, going through her own divorce and head-to-head with Carrington Lane (played by Sarah Paulson), an attorney representing her husband in divorce proceedings. The show is set to hit Hulu on November 4.
Outside of the law office, Kardashian’s night in Paris was an archival fashion birthday bonanza. Her more recent looks, pulled from the runway have been just as striking; at the weekend, she masked up in Glenn Martens’s Margiela couture for the Academy Museum Gala.
Taking risks and pulling pieces of fashion history are all a part of Kim Kardashian’s style D.N.A; her 45th birthday looks proved no exception.
