Meet the Vintage Entrepreneurs Stylists and Internet Personalities Who Are Changing Street Style in 2023

September is a momentous month that marks both back-to-school and a return to the runways. In the early days of Virgo season, we always look forward to a new class of street-style stars outside the shows. This year, we discovered they’re all bound by a love of vintage shopping; they’re people who don’t need to wear the latest trends in order to stand out. And, like the rest of us, they have their eyes trained on TikTok for the latest intel on the cool new thrift stores—though some also have their own stores!

You may see these street stylers at the season’s biggest shows (think: Saint Laurent, Gucci, and Loewe) but you’ll never catch them in a full designer look. These are people who love an eclectic high-low mix, and that’s what makes them interesting. Scroll through to meet 11 new faces of street style in 2023.

Can you describe your personal style and your style influences?

My style is fun, comfortable, and really showcases how I’m feeling in the moment. I like to dress based on my surroundings or wherever I’m going. If one night I’m going bowling, but then I’m going to dinner, I’m going to try to find something that works for both of those environments.

I’m very influenced by the ’90s. Jane Birkin is one of my style icons, but I’m also a girl that grew up on That’s So Raven and Lizzie McGuire, so I think it’s just a melting pot of all those things. I love characters where you can really tell their personality based on the clothes they wear without even having to speak or say anything.

What is the oldest piece in your closet and what is your favorite way to style it?

A Hanes, royal blue zip up that I have had since I was probably six years old in elementary school. It fits me perfectly. It’s soft and long-sleeved, a little tight, and it says Maple Mustangs on it with a bunch of stars. I’ll wear it to Pilates, or I’ll even wear it with leather pants and a pointy toed pump and just zip it up. It’s a really versatile piece which is why I think I’ve had it for so long. The graphic is just really cute and special.

Where is your favorite place to shop IRL and online for vintage pieces?

I used to be very strictly an in-person vintage shopper, but I think the pandemic made me explore online shopping more. I love to browse Etsy and eBay and those are my two guilty pleasures. And I love TheRealReal app, I can’t help it, it’s just so addicting.

But whatever town I’m in, I’ll look up consignment stores and vintage stores on Yelp and just walk to the closest one. I’m not picky and will shop anywhere and try to find something no matter what. Maybe it’s just a shopping addiction! But shopping in Paris is my favorite thing, that’s where I get the most staple pieces for my wardrobe. I also buy a lot of fun things in Los Angeles.

Can you describe your personal style and some of your style influences?

Cecilie Moosgard: I think our style is very classic and timeless. I’ll often say that it’s kind of boring because we really stick to the basics and pieces that we wear over and over again. We try to not be influenced by trends and will always opt for the classic styles that we feel comfortable in.

But I also think that we are very minimalistic in a sense. Maybe it’s the Scandinavian style, but we like a lot of black and white, and very classic pieces like a good knit t-shirt and a great pair of denim jeans.

Amalie Moosgaard: What we wear doesn’t have to be luxury, some of the best pieces we have are just H&M shirts. Good basics can be from high street or local Danish brands, and they can last for seasons. I think a big part of our uniform is that we like to mend our clothes. We recently sent our jeans back to our grandmother in the countryside to mend them, and it’s the same with our boots, every year we take them to the cobblers for a new polish and new soul. I think this is a very big part of being timeless and clean and having a classic style.

What is the oldest piece in your closet and what is your favorite way to style it?

AM: The oldest piece I have is a pair of Manolo Carolyne kitten heels and I think they’re perfect. I just put on a good jean, a shirt, and then I put the shoes on and look put-together. They have a special place in my heart, and I don’t want to ever get rid of them, even if they may need some love and care.

CM: We also share an old Ralph Lauren tweed men’s jacket that we found on the streets of New York years ago. It’s at my place right now. We also both have some cashmere turtlenecks that we’ve worn for years now and they don’t pill, which is amazing. Those are hard to find!

Where is your favorite place to shop IRL and online for vintage pieces?

CM: Online, I always go to Vestiare or TheRealReal. In the real world, I feel like we are really bad at it. We’ve made some really good finds here and there, but we don’t have the patience for it always. It takes a lot of patience going through all those great places. I’m always envious of my colleagues who are so good at it and have good finds.

AM: We are really lucky that we’re able to travel a lot with our work. Mexico City is perfect for Levi’s. New York City also has great ones, but they are so curated and the price point is so much higher. Otherwise small places in Rome and Milan are where you can find some really great old blazers. Or you need to go out to the countryside and go to a small charity shop where you can find the best stuff for nothing. I have a tweed blazer that I always get complimented on, and it cost me two euros! I think sometimes those are the best finds, not from a curated store but from a place you have to really go in and have the patience to find the best pieces.

What key item are you excited to wear this upcoming fashion week?

AM: I just got new wool pieces from Sea New York that I’m really excited to wear. But otherwise I think we’re wearing good coats that we’ve worn already. We try to not always wear new stuff for fashion week. We’re not scared of wearing the same stuff and coats are perfect, you just throw it on and it’s a look.

CM: And I guess it’s always great denim or a good tote bag or leather clutch. Ballet flats or Kitten heels are our go-to. September is always nice because you can wear a coat, but also have your ankles bare which is the perfect outfit for us.

Can you describe your personal style and some of your style influences?

I would describe my personal style as refined chaos. My outfits are a bit chaotic. I understand if you’re like, ’why did she put that together?’, and I do want people to think that! I feel like I see a lot of people who have amazing personal style and they love a kind of clown couture vibe. So I am like refined clown couture; so as weird as the outfits are, there’s always some kind of sharp, clean sense to it. A little off-kilter. But I feel fun is always the most important thing in everything I wear. It may not look right, but for some reason it’s giving something.

My mom is one of my main style inspirations. I’m Nigerian and Irish by heritage, so I love randomly wearing to promote Ireland and Nigeria.

Where is your favorite place to shop IRL and online for vintage pieces?

I’m an eBay girl. I made my eBay account in secondary school, but you needed to be over 18 to use it, so my partner at the time let me use his mom’s, and then my mom and dad let me use theirs and that’s how I could buy stuff. I ended up working there a few years later.

And then at charity shops, I really love them, especially in the richer parts of Dublin. If you go there, you’re going to find people who don’t care about their goodies.

I also follow cool fashion people and they’re always selling their stuff. My best find was from TikTok. A girl was selling her Chopova Lowena skirt, there were lots of people commenting but not actually trying to buy it. I went and clicked on her Instagram and messaged her. She said I was the first person to get in touch. I got it for 500 euros.

What key item are you excited to wear this upcoming fashion week?

I made sure to bring a lot of Irish brands, including this custom mesh piece by Thread and Tantrum that I’m really excited about. I have a lot of bags and jumpers from Irish designers, I don’t know what it is but I love repping this country. And it’s always a great conversation-starter because people are like, ’oh, you’re from Ireland?’ Because physically I don’t look like I am. So it’s great to rep and wear the flag.

Can you describe your personal style and some of your style influences?

I think it’s quite playful and experimental. I like to play around with juxtapositions and contrasts in colors, and masculine and feminine pieces. I say I gather influences from magazines or films. Also my nan and my mom are some of my style influences.

What is the most important thing for you when getting dressed?

Not overthinking my outfit. I think when you overthink and get too stressed, it can get a bit crazy. But it depends on what mood I am in and if I want to feel dressy or be really comfy. I think at the moment I get a lot of satisfaction from color combinations like blues and yellows, pinks and browns, and khakis and yellows.

What is the oldest piece in your closet and what is your favorite way to style it?

My mom has an amazing belt collection and she’s got this green and khaki cowhide belt with a big chunky gold buckle. It’s my oldest piece and I style it with everything from wearing it over a dress, to a baggy pair of denim trousers, to hot pants. It tends to work with everything.

Can you describe your personal style and some of your style influences?

Right now I like to keep my style feminine and cute with a hint of edginess. I’m influenced by the ballerina/coquette styles—I love bows, and Sandy Liang and Simone Rocha are brands I’m keeping an eye on—but I also gravitate towards brands like No/faith studios, and Bella Hadid’s street style with the influences from the early 2000s!

What is the most important thing for you when getting dressed?

Right now for the most part I like to feel comfortable with the base of my outfit, and then I’ll layer a corset or shorts/skirt with pants to make the outfit more interesting.

What key item are you excited to wear this upcoming fashion week?

I’m very excited to style leggings and socks with different details and lace. I’m also excited to play around with excessive layering!

What is the most important thing for you when getting dressed?

There’s a couple of things that I really look at when picking my outfit. Color is super important to me because I like everything to be cohesive. Also I look at proportions. I didn’t realize how important it was until I was a personal shopping assistant at Barney’s; the woman I worked under taught me a lot about proportion and fit. And I always look at being comfy, cute, and weather appropriate because I hate being cold and wet if it is rainy out. I actually needed to go get an Arc’teryx jacket in Copenhagen because of the rain since all the cute clothes I packed were for a hundred degree weather. But I love mixing different silhouettes, like something that is super fancy on the bottom and something casual and made for hiking and weather on the top.

What is the oldest piece in your closet and what is your favorite way to style it?

So I tend to have a lot of old pieces in my closet only because of what I sell at Eveliina Vintage. We border on antiques because everything is between like the late 1800s and 1930s. The oldest thing in my closet right now is a cotton, long-sleeve Edwardian dress. They’re really hard to find, especially not super small sizes because they used to wear them with corsets on top or underneath. But this one fits perfectly. I love it. I recently paired it with Salomon sneakers which is really fun because it’s not the way that they were intended to be worn, and it brings in that utilitarian vibe.

Where is your favorite place to shop IRL and online for vintage pieces?

In New York, I love James Veloria and Lara Koleji. Online I love Shop Handbook, they have a lot of workwear and t-shirts and do drops every Thursday. I also love going to vintage fairs. I’m often there as a vendor with Eveliina Vintage, and they’re definitely a holy grail. If anyone is getting into vintage I would go to Manhattan Vintage’s website and look at their vendors and go through their Instagrams.

But my vintage store is number one on my list. I find myself wearing it a lot. I think that everyone, if they have a business, should be wearing what you sell. Just because if you’re not wearing them, then I don’t know how you expect other people to wear it.

Can you describe your personal style and some of your style influences?

I would describe my personal style as evolving and fresh. I always mix classic pieces that have been in my wardrobe forever, with new things that I am sent or that I thrift. My fashion icon is Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. I think she did such an incredible job at wearing elevated casual outfits that always had a special element to them. Meg Ryan is someone who’s natural street style I’ve always come back to on my mood boards also. She wears really similar silhouettes to what I would usually go for… I love her.

What is the most important thing for you when getting dressed?

I think how I feel and the weather are the two most important things to me. Some days if I’m bloated or maybe just feeling like not showing a lot of skin, then I don’t; but most of the time I live for a tight short shirt and some baggy pants. Also, I absolutely hate being cold so I’ll always opt to cover myself in the winter and then take off the layers when I get to my destination. I also always put a little lipgloss on while getting ready so I feel like my most confident self!

Where is your favorite place to shop IRL and online for vintage pieces?

I love going to Procell Vintage, and online I’ll usually check DePop or TheReal Real. I haven’t been shopping too much lately because I feel like I have so many under-loved pieces, so I’ve actually just been cycling through my own wardrobe.

Can you describe your personal style and some of your style influences?

Spontaneous and unpredictable, I wear whatever I feel like that day. This approach means sometimes I’m very satisfied with how I dressed for the day, but also oftentimes I’m quite unhappy about my looks. I end up changing my outfit multiple times a day, but I find this pattern to be more fun than annoying. My style influences often come from movies that I watch. I’m often inspired by how people dressed in the past.

What is the most important thing for you when getting dressed?

How comfortable I feel! It’s not a matter of whether the materials or fit are comfortable, but about how I feel when I wear the clothes. What I wear oftentimes heavily dictates how I feel for the day, so this is what I think the most when getting dressed.

What is the oldest piece in your closet and what is your favorite way to style it?

The oldest piece in my closet is a pair of dress pants I received when I was working at Dior as a salesperson. Wearing the dress pants reminds me of those times, and it keeps me trying my best in whatever I do.

Can you describe your personal style and some of your style influences?

I would describe my style as colorful, mismatched, vintage, and sexy. I’m a colorful person and I think there are times I wear so much color that it almost becomes a little clown-esque, so now I try to look for balance. My best outfits always exist when I’m in a hurry and I’m in front of my closet and just grab random stuff. Like during the last Copenhagen Fashion week, I wore my vintage Cavalli jeans layered with a mini knit skirt. It was really mismatched but turned out to be super-fun. And lastly, I always like things that are somewhat retro and look like they came from another period in time. It’s not about something that looks worn but more like it had another life before me.

As for style icons, I mean, my wardrobe is Carrie Bradshaw. The fact that my style looks grabbed together like mini skirts here, tube top there, and I have this scarf but I wear it around my upper arm and not as a scarf. It’s very much reminiscent of the early seasons of Sex and the City.

What is the oldest piece in your closet and what is your favorite way to style it?

The oldest piece in my closet is a scarf. Well, actually it was the belt from a dress that belonged to my mom. But I do all these things with it, like wear it as a headband, or a scarf, or on my wrist. I’m a really big fan of items that have multiple ways to use it. My mom unfortunately passed away 13 years ago, so it’s a special way to keep her with me and to continue her colorful style.

Where is your favorite place to shop IRL and online for vintage pieces?

I love the Netherlands and Amsterdam for vintage. We have so many nice vintage shops here. I really like the thrift shops where you really have to like to dive in, but we also have more curated stores where there’s more designer pieces. I bought a very cute vintage Fendi bikini from one of those.

I really like shopping in my own city and I’m always able to find cute things here. But I love to shop vintage when I travel, too. In Copenhagen, I always go to Times Up Vintage, and in New York, I love The Break. But when shopping for vintage, I find that the best pieces are the ones I wasn’t looking for.

Can you describe your personal style and some of your style influences?

My style is chameleon-like. I like changing clothes according to my mood and the occasion. Certainly, I maintain references related to hip-hop and streetwear culture. In some cases, I feel like highlighting my feminine side, while other times I prioritize comfort. I enjoy being more creative for special occasions and paying more attention to makeup and hair, which I usually keep very natural. My style icons are diverse and mainly come from the music world, another one of my great passions. Some names include Erykah Badu, FKA twigs, and Teyana Taylor.

What is the oldest piece in your closet and what is your favorite way to style it?

The oldest piece I probably have is a gold necklace that my family gave me when I was little. I don’t usually keep clothes for a long time because my taste and personality are constantly changing. I always tend to donate my things to others and frequently change my wardrobe. However, this necklace symbolizes my roots; it represents a part of me that will never be replaced. I wear it almost all the time and pair it with other accessories, both gold and silver; I really like mixing metals.

What key item are you excited to wear this upcoming fashion week?

I can’t wait to wear something inspired by the Queen of Punk (among other things) Vivienne Westwood. Certainly, a corset or some tartan won’t be missing from my looks, especially since these are elements that are part of the new trends for the upcoming fall-winter season.
