PhotoVogue Festival 2023: The Talks
This conversation took place on November 17th 2023 as part of the PhotoVogue Festival 2023 which centered around the theme “What Makes us Human?: Image in the Age of A.I.”
In “How the Content Authenticity Initiative Combats Digital Mis/Disinformation”, Santiago Lyon will examine how, back in 2019, Adobe established the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI). CAI has been used to develop the open-source industry standard for establishing the provenance of digital file types, a valuable tool in the fight against the mis/disinformation challenging the news industry and the public’s trust in what is authentic. Today, the CAI community of 1500+ members includes major media and technology companies such as AFP, AP, Reuters, BBC, DPA, NYT, Washington Post, WSJ, Getty Images, Shutterstock and others, as well as Microsoft, Arm, Qualcomm, Nikon and more. The CAI community is rapidly developing and implementing practical tools to show news consumers where digital content originates and what changes are made to it along its journey from creation, through editing and on to publication.
This talk is curated by Santiago Lyon, Head of Advocacy and Education for the Adobe-led Content Authenticity Initiative, working to combat misinformation through digital content provenance. Lyon has more than 35 years of experience in photography as an award-winning photojournalist, photo editor, media executive and educator. As a photographer for Reuters and the Associated Press for 20 years he won multiple photojournalism awards for his work between 1989-1999 where he photographed 8 wars on 4 continents. In 2003/2004 he was a Nieman Fellow in journalism at Harvard University before being named VP/Director of Photography at the Associated Press, a position he held until 2016. Under his direction the AP won three Pulitzer Prizes for photography as well as multiple other major photojournalism awards around the world. He was Chair of the Jury for the 2013 World Press Photo contest. Lyon serves on the board of directors of the Eddie Adams Workshop and the advisory board of the VII Foundation. He also teaches regularly at the International Center of Photography in New York.
