PhotoVogue Festival 2023: The Talks

This conversation took place on November 17th 2023 as part of the PhotoVogue Festival 2023 which centered around the theme “What Makes us Human?: Image in the Age of A.I.”

Synopsis | Multimedia forensics when digital photography meets artificial intelligence

In the age of digital imagery intertwined with the prowess of artificial intelligence (AI), the very essence of visual authenticity faces an unprecedented crossroads. With AI s remarkable ability to manipulate and craft digital photographs with astonishing realism, the boundaries between reality and simulation have become increasingly porous. The seamless integration of AI technologies, such as deep learning and generative adversarial networks (GANs), has enabled the creation of synthetic images that can deceive even the discerning eye.

While this innovation opens doors to unparalleled creative expression and visual manipulation, it also ushers in a formidable challenge: how can we distinguish the genuine from the artificially crafted?

In the quest to preserve the integrity of digital photography in the AI era, the field of Multimedia Forensics (MMF) has emerged as a beacon of hope. A range of innovative forensic solutions is being developed to combat the challenges posed by AI-driven manipulation and synthesis of images.

In this talk, we showcase the progress made in by the multimedia forensic community in the last few years. From leveraging AI-driven detection methods to unveiling unique data-driven approaches, this talk sheds light on the collaborative efforts that are reshaping the field. As we navigate through the intersection of AI and multimedia forensics, we ll gain insights into the promises and limitations associated with these evolving technologies.

About the speaker

Paolo Bestagini will curate “Multimedia forensics when digital photography meets artificial intelligence”. He received the M.Sc. degree in Telecommunications Engineering and the Ph.D. degree in Information Technology from the Politecnico di Milano in 2010 and 2014, respectively. He is currently Assistant Professor with the Image and Sound Processing Lab (ISPL) at the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (DEIB) of the Politecnico di Milano.

His research interests focus on signal processing and machine learning for multimedia forensics. He has been scientific investigator for several projects funded by the European Commission (REWIND, FUN-media), the Italian Ministry of University and Research (Restart, FOSTERER), and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in the USA (MediFor, SemaFor).

He co-authored more than 130 scientific papers published on international journals or conference proceedings. He is an elected member of the IEEE Information Forensics and Security Technical Committee for the second time. He serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (TCSVT) and the Elsevier Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation (JVCI).
