Over the last three decades, Rick Owens has built a universe with its own fashion vernacular—a world where high fashion meets dystopia and rebellion is the ultimate form of self-expression. Known for his architectural silhouettes, sculptural draping, and near-religious devoutness to black, the California-born “Lord of Darkness” has transformed avant-garde wear from an underground subculture into a universally desired luxury aesthetic.

The Rick Owens look is instantly recognizable: a contrast of glamour and grunge, where platform boots are paired with flowing gowns and asymmetrical skirts, cocoon-like jackets top drop-crotch sweatpants, and skin-tight leather pants are tucked into high-top sneakers. Likewise, the visionary’s Paris Fashion Week runways are as much a showcase of new collections as they are performance art, with models stomping through pink-hued smoke, wading water, or carrying other models on past catwalks.

By defiantly rejecting the beauty conventions of designer fashion in favor of something more subversive and goth, Owens has cultivated a die-hard following for his apocalyptic vision of the sublime. Visually, the brand disciples—self-proclaimed “weirdos” and “outsiders”—are easy to spot, clad in black leather, distressed knits, and exaggerated-shoulder jackets. But their devotion runs deeper than dress; the Owens fandom worships not just the clothes but a shared philosophy of unapologetic individuality when it comes to fashion.

This sentiment was palpable outside the brand’s New York City boutique on Tuesday, where a crowd gathered hours ahead of Owens’ Temple of Love book signing, transforming the sidewalk into a scene that was equal parts spectacle and reverence. As strangers in line became friends, they traded compliments over looks, swapped stories about their most treasured Rick Owens pieces, and reminisced about the collections that first drew them into the world of the Dark Lord.

According to the gospel of Rick Owens, darkness isn’t something to shy away from but to wield as a means of establishing identity. As one passerby remarked while walking past the crowd dressed in mostly black: “I don’t know what these people are lining up for, but this is, for sure, a Rick Owens crowd.”

Ahead, more from Vogue’s night with Rick Owens devotees.

Tyshawn Blount (left): “I am here just to support my best friend, who is a big Rick Owens fan. The contrast and shapes and fabrics that I've been seeing in this line is pretty cool.” Xiaoge Yu (center): “I love how his style is so unique but also is really gothic and also really dark, and it makes you look really stylish and makes a statement.” Dylan Gong (right): “I'm really happy with what he has done for the trans community recently, with donating to trans kids in need, as someone that is also trans. I'm really happy to be here. I waited a decade for this moment.”

Tyrone Dylan, Head of Design, Rick Owens Lilies: “Everyone interprets [the Rick Owens aesthetic] in such different ways, and I love seeing everyone who's lining up, who's putting all this effort. It's really evolved from how it began, and I love seeing how people identify with the clothes in their own way and make it personal to them. Right now, I'm like a slutty cowboy, but there's like the goth, and then there's the glam, and everyone's doing it in their own way, which I think is really special.”

M. Lamar (left): “I am wearing the Anubis jacket, the Gary jumpsuit on the bottom, and the knee-high Kiss heels — they’re from different seasons. I'm an artist, I'm a musician, so this helps me express more fully what my aesthetic is. I call it ‘Negrogothic.’” Riley McDermott (right): “To me, Rick means self-love. Rick lets me fully express myself. When my stutter stops me, my clothing can take over my self-expression, when I can't fully talk it out. For me, wearing Rick helps me be more myself.”

Daniil Yaburov: “Rick Owens is one of the craziest designers. He's showing the world that, if you have the idea, you can literally release this to the world and show that everything is possible. Because every idea that he's doing is just like crazy. And that's why [he’s] so interesting for me.”

Harvey Cohen: “I come from Philadelphia. The store I go to is Joan Shepp, and she exposed me to [the brand], I guess, almost eight years ago or so. And I've been getting pieces all along. I have about 100 cardigans. I have about 15 drop-crotch shorts, sheer tops, many T-shirts. I still get other things, but 90% of my clothing is Rick. I don't do anything in moderation when it comes to me. I'm a collector.”

Ariel Morgan: “I feel like Rick Owens uses the influences of older rock fashion or punk fashion or queer or BDSM type fashion, and mixes it all together to create a collage, rather than just sticking to only one kind of aesthetic. It's very dark, but it's very layered and kind of moves through the ages.”
