Gird your loins and throw on your really, really long coats. The Matrix is being reloaded, again, for the fourth time. Yesterday, it was announced that director Lana Wachowski would be filming what is being referred to as “The Matrix 4,” with production set to start in 2020 and original cast members Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss onboard to star as Neo and Trinity, respectively. (Fun fact: It is currently the 20-year anniversary of the first release of The Matrix.)
So what does this all mean for your wardrobe? Well, Matrix style—originally conceived by costume designer Kym Barrett—has been having something of an extended moment in streetwear and on runways over the past few seasons, particularly in the form of those teeny-tiny sunglasses that delicately balance on the slopes of celebrity noses. There’s also the sci-fi film’s ankle-grazing leather trench coats, which Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid nodded to during Fashion Week.
To celebrate this completely unexpected news, consider adding some of those sweeping silhouettes to your own wardrobe this fall. For the traditionalist, Georgian label Situationist offers a rich incarnation. For a twist of sheen, Topshop has a belted vinyl design. But given the movie changed how action films looked when it premiered in 1999, you could remix the concept entirely with a faux snake-effect trench by Georgia Alice or a butterscotch piece from A.W.A.K.E.
In other words, while the long conversation about whether the real world is really real ensues, make the long trench a reality.
