New Yorkers Set Sail in Hemingway’s Wooden Boat with Loro Piana
For the first time in a long time, Friday night in New York City felt like the real deal. With a distinctly fall chill in the air, it was clear that fewer Manhattanites were making their trek from town to country for the weekend. As the sun began to set, a select group found their way to North Cove Marina, where they were met with a stunning wooden boat named Rarebit. The 1939 Wheeler Playmate is just one of the last four commissioned by Ernest Hemingway and was acquired by actor Matthew Rhys in 2017. “I’ve spent the last four years restoring it, so I’m so happy this fun group is getting to enjoy it tonight,” Rhys told Vogue.
Hosted by Loro Piana, the gathering served as a “welcome back to New York” evening where New Yorkers like Julianna Margulies, Carla Gugino, and Maye Musk—all wearing pairs of deck-friendly Loro Piana White Sole sailing shoes—swapped summer tales and their plans for the remainder of the year. “It’s magical and kind of surreal,” Jill Kargman told us. “I can’t think of a cooler way to welcome fall than by having this anchors-away moment with bellinis, and old friends, and Loro Piana life preservers. I mean, if you’re drowning, you may as well go out in style.”
Following a cruise around the Statue of Liberty, partygoers disembarked for dinner. Set in the Bartholdi Presidential Suite at the new Casa Cipriani, the palatial room includes a wraparound terrace with a view of Lady Liberty and, you guessed it, Loro Piana fabrics in every corner, from the sofas to the curtains to the leather-bound columns. “The combination of all of the dark mahogany and sumptuous fabric kind of makes it feel like I’ve walked into a murder mystery at Gosford Park,” Sophie Sumner joked as pasta, branzino, and more of the signature bellinis made the rounds. “Some may say, scatter my ashes at Bergdorf’s, but I would say just lay me to rest right here at Cipriani.”
