I think it s just great to be in this group of women
who all strive for excellence.
You do service over here,
you got sisterhood thriving over here,
it s just really like a great place to grow
and become who you will be.
(cheering)
Go tigers!
[Interviewer] Tell me about becoming a queen.
So we had a pageant here,
well we have a pageant traditionally every year since 1982.
[Interviewer] What are your responsibilities as a queen?
Well four months, I have to execute my platform
that I m passionate about.
And my platform is mental health and the importance of it.
[Interviewer] Is that what you re gonna do
when you graduate?
Yes, I want to incorporate that passion with art,
so that I can kinda create a platform for people
to openly discuss things like mental health.
From the age of 4, I knew I wanted to be
a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority incorporated.
I remember being a little girl and walking
in like Wal-Mart or Belk or Dillard s,
and I remember looking at women
and I could literally walk up to them and say,
are you an AKA?
And I knew immediately they were a AKA
by the way they carried themselves.
This is my fiftieth, I m golden this year.
And my golden pin.
(laughs)
[Interviewer] What about you guys?
I m 51.
Yes.
Oh, you were golden last year.
I m golden last year.
You know how you never know how strong tea is
until you put it into hot water.
You never know how strong a woman is
until you put her into hot water.
And you are a strong sister, thank you.
