Someone thinks that pandas are not real.
[both laughing]
The chick from the
thing earlier. That felt like you just
got that. No, I did.
I was doing. Brought to you
by spirit from above. [tone beeping]
Hi, I m Zoe Kravitz. I m Austin Butler.
And this is Off the Cuff.
[upbeat music] Let s do this.
Round one, icebreakers.
First impression of me?
Funnier than I anticipated.
Okay. Yes.
I like that.
What s the last thing you listened to?
I m listening to this podcast called Dissect,
and they dissect in rainbows by radio.
[Zoe gasping] It s fantastic.
Is it specifically a music podcast?
Yeah.
He takes an entire season and dissects an album.
It s blowing my mind.
Into it.
It s amazing. Okay.
What s your iPhone background?
My mom and my grandma. Oh, that s so sweet.
Very wholesome. That s really cute.
An old picture?
Yeah. Round two, getting personal.
What s your bad habit?
My bad habit.
Probably not texting people back.
Yes. What is your secret talent?
What is my secret talent?
Well, I guess it wouldn t be a secret if you knew it.
Yeah. Yeah.
I m trying to think of things that I know about you
that nobody else knows. What s my secret talent?
My secret talent is I can pick up things with my feet.
That s a real good talent.
Yeah. That s useful.
Yes, it is. What if your hands are full.
Earlier today I was in glam.
I had no hands and there was something on the floor
and I picked it up
with my feet. That s right.
And I handed it to myself.
She had things in her hands and she picked up my coffee
and she put it in my hands.
I could. You could.
Okay. Unsanitary,
[Zoe laughing] but really helpful.
My feet are clean. [Austin laughing]
Who s someone you look up to?
I spent some time with Matthew McConaughey the other day.
All right, all right, all right.
I really, that s good.
Thank you. That was really good.
Thank you so much.
That s my secret talent. [Austin laughing]
Doing Matthew McConaughey. She can do a killer
Matthew McConaughey impression.
[both laughing]
High school girls, what does they say?
You got it. I get older,
they stay the same age.
Yeah. Alright.
I blacked out for a second.
I thought he was actually there.
I know. That s amazing.
Yeah. Again, I m so sorry, Matthew.
[Austin scoffing]
Anyway, you look up to him. What a legend.
I look up to him.
Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I do.
Do you have an audition horror story?
I once did an audition
and during the audition, the director,
I heard the shuffling of papers and things.
I don t know whether he was looking
at other actor s headshots or a menu.
But he was, it was an emotional scene
and he was not paying attention.
Did you get it? And I got the part
and I had a great time making it.
It was Batman. [Austin laughing]
[laughing] No, it was this film.
It was Darren.
It was Darren.
Darren the whole time just texting.
What would you do if you weren t an actor?
I ve always wanted to be one of those people at a motel.
When you check in that they tell you where you park
and they draw on the little map, the hotel map.
And they you. What job is that?
I don t know. It s the person at the front desk
at a motel.
But you only because I think the job description
is more than just showing people [laughing] where they park.
They also give you your keys.
That s a valet. [both laughing]
What s your desert Island meal?
Something Japanese.
A teriyaki salmon with rice
and a green thing.
It s boring, but it s something I could eat every day.
Or breakfast burritos.
I love a breakfast burrito.
I love a breakfast burrito. I could eat one of those
every day. Yeah.
Is it me? It s you.
Okay.
What s something you initially hated but learned to love?
About you? Or, no. Yes.
I m kidding. Yes. Specifically about me.
What s something that I hated and I learned to love?
No, I never hate anything about you.
I think getting up early in the morning.
That s a good one.
That s what just came to me right now.
Yeah. Because yeah, I used to just
absolutely despise it, but I m starting to get to the point
now where I can anticipate the feeling of how good
it will be when you re up quite early.
I m like, wow, look at this whole new, look at this.
Look at this new day. Yeah, look at these people,
they re jogging and the light s different.
The light is different through the trees.
Yeah. And the sound of the birds.
Yeah. I m just like, wow. And the feeling of.
So this is morning. This is morning. Yeah.
Yeah. I would ve been asleep
for another three hours. Yeah.
Yeah. That s nice. Yeah. That s a good one.
Thank you. What s something you heard recently
that surprised you?
I m trying to think of a time I went, oh, really.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I like that feeling.
You know what I m saying?
Someone thinks that pandas are not real.
[both laughing]
The chick from the. That felt like you just
Thing earlier. That felt like you just.
No, I did.
I was doing. Brought to you
by spirit from above.
Somebody thinks that pandas
aren t real. Someone in the room.
No, I was doing an interview earlier.
They were asking me about conspiracy theories
and this one girl was like, pandas aren t real.
There s something off about them
and I don t think they re real.
And I was like, what?
Animatronic All pandas.
Not like panda s not a thing. Yeah, yeah,
As a concept.
Also, two different people recently told me
they hadn t seen The Matrix, and I was like what?
That s surprising. So, and also I feel
I connected somehow.
Round three. All right.
Film questions.
Hardest scene to film in Caught Stealing?
There were physical things.
Yeah, a lot of running.
A lot of getting beaten up,
hanging out of a six story window all day.
Yes. All day. I could hardly move my arm
after that, it was difficult physically,
but then there was a scene when we re in Coney Island
and I get some, I don t wanna spoil things,
but I get some bad news.
It s towards a certain point in the movie
where a lot of bad things have been happening
and I m on the beach. Yeah.
And I get that phone call. Yeah.
We were running out of light
and so we only got to shoot one take of each setup.
And it s a very emotional scene,
so we just kind of jumped into it
and thankfully I think we got it,
but we just. The pressure.
Shot one from the front,
one from the side, one from the back, and it was.
There s something fun about that
though. It s kind of awesome.
Yeah. Exhilarating.
What is a lesson you learned on the set
of Caught Stealing?
I don t know.
I mean, I definitely learned things.
Is there anything you learned about me?
I learned that you love peanut butter
and jelly sandwiches.
I do. And we share a lot of those.
Yeah. Okay. Round four.
Style slash guessing game.
I don t understand the category, but.
Yeah, it s a very random
style slash guessing game. Style slash guessing game.
We re gonna find out.
Have you ever kept a piece of clothing
from one of your projects?
People love this question. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Dune I kept the knives.
From Bikeriders I kept the leather jacket
and a bunch of rings.
From this I can t actually remember besides the lighter.
I kept the lighter that you have.
You had good shirts.
I feel like we should have kept those.
Yeah, yeah. I think I may have some shirts.
How involved were you in your character s wardrobe
for Caught Stealing?
I was pretty involved. I feel like
you were very involved. I m a pretty
opinionated person. You got a lot of opinions.
Okay. All right. Good opinions.
Thank you.
Yeah, I feel like that s part of creating a character.
Yeah. You work together
with the costume designer and director and.
Did you have different EMT outfits
that you maybe liked less and then you chose this one or?
No, actually it was pretty I think we, no,
but I wanted like all these bracelets that she wears.
I like how you did that. Thank you.
But you had to cover up your tattoos?
Yes. And then the bracelets
would rub. Would take off the makeup.
And take off the makeup.
Yeah. Horrible mistake.
But it was worth it.
I think so.
What is this from?
Oh, interesting.
That is a Beastie Boy shirt
that I wear in High Fidelity.
God, you know yourself. That s cool.
I know myself well also, that s my shirt.
That s awesome. This is your personal shirt?
That s my personal shirt. Did you bring
that from home?
Yeah. Did you buy it for the show?
No, I already had it.
Okay. Yeah. What s this from?
What is this from?
Oh, that s my shirt from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Wow. Okay. Yeah. Good job.
Yeah. Yeah.
[Austin] That s Spahn Ranch.
Lightning round. Lightning round.
Who s going first?
New York or LA?
New York. Horror or comedy? Comedy. Breakfast or dinner?
Breakfast. Yes.
Blur or Oasis? Oasis. Yesterday
or tomorrow?
Tomorrow. Favorite movie shot in New York City?
Taxi Driver. Favorite borough in New York?
Brooklyn. London punk versus New York punk?
London punk. Punk or hip hop?
I don t know. I think they re both, punk.
Copy deaf. Overdressed or underdressed?
Overdressed. Really? Respect.
Now or later?
Now. Now.
Definitely now. Yes or no?
Yes.
[paper flipping] [light music]
Well played.
Thank you for writing all these questions
for whoever took the time.
Oh, my God. To type them
And put them on paper. You are so wild right now.
I really appreciate the flowers.
Gorgeous flowers. And this beautiful set.
Whoever chose the backdrop,
it was a very creative choice. Okay. Goodbye.
Goodbye, Vogue.
Thank you so much.
Thanks for having us Vogue.
