[upbeat music]
Virginia, are we ready?
We re here?
Yes, we re ready.
Rolling!
[all laugh]
[Director] Action!
We re starting off the evening before the inauguration
at the Washington Memorial.
Kamala Harris is wearing Pyer Moss
and Dr. Biden is wearing Jonathan Cohen.
The vice president did not come to play in this.
I really think this entire moment
is about what she s wearing.
And I think the Pyer Moss look really signifies the fact
that we re redefining who great American designers are.
Yeah, I especially love the detail in the back.
Yes. Oh, yeah.
Cause you saw very classic camel coat from the front
and she turned around and you have that amazing view.
And I just thought that was kind of the killer moment.
And I stupidly enough thought that that was the wind.
[all laugh]
Maybe that s also, it s a wind, a new air
that s blowing through Washington.
[Tonne] Exactly, exactly.
It s symbolic.
It blew in.
Well, they wouldn t have shown it from the back
unless it had some kind of significance.
[Paloma] Correct.
The wave of change, the winds of change
and the waves of change.
[all agree]
Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.
[Gabriella] Do you see, do you see?
That makes sense, makes sense.
Okay, next.
[Virginia] President Biden and Dr. Biden
stepping out onto the podium on Inauguration Day.
He is wearing Ralph Lauren and she s in Markarian.
Yeah, Markarian isn t a name
that I think a lot of people knew,
myself included.
I didn t know that it was this young designer,
Alexandra O Neil.
She s established her label in 2017.
And so I thought it was kind of interesting
that she chose to put a sort of a designer
that very people knew on the map.
[Virginia] Can we talk about
the perfection of his look, though?
I mean, that is giving you presidential material.
It is so fabulous.
There is not a Fleck of lint on that jacket.
A shoe to pant ratio on a man is -
Critical. Critical, chef s kiss.
If that is executed correctly, you can -
[Gabriella] Be the leader of the free world.
But you re missing the biggest one, is the shoe.
Oh, the lacing of the shoe, the style of the shoe, 100%.
If that shoe is wrong,
walk away. It s wrong, correct.
Correct.
Can I say one thing about Dr. Biden again?
I feel like she s having fun.
I think this was a really daunting moment
and I think a lot of people were probably far too interested
in what she was going to wear
and it s like she s giving teal
and it s all - It s velvet.
Embellished and sparkly.
I m excited to see where she goes from here.
Okay, moving on, we re going to
Kamala Harris and family
walking down Pennsylvania Avenue.
I mean, where do you begin?
This to me is such a charming family portrait.
So much about Kamala is about how we love her family.
I love her choice too, Christopher John Rogers.
[Gabriella] I mean, it s perfection.
Perfect.
Perfect.
Also, purple.
I feel like purple as a color,
means so much to the black community.
I feel like she s giving black queen.
Yeah, and the suffragettes also,
purple was extremely important.
So I just think this is -
The references are spot on.
Yeah, the references are great.
Also just Christopher John Rogers,
his ability with colors and expression,
I think the tailoring is iconic.
It s a really nice departure
from her normal pantsuits vibe,
but still feels pretty authentic to her.
And then Ella in Miu Miu, right?
Yes, let s talk about that,
because that s our next slide,
of Ella and her father.
I mean, this was really Ella s big moment.
I mean, she was the breakout star to me,
in terms of fashion.
Everybody was talking about Ella
and I don t think anybody really knew
who she was before this.
And now we all know who she is.
I mean, I have to say,
on this great day in American politics,
the Italians did not come to play.
Because the Miu Miu moment,
I think we re gonna talk about the Prada moment.
Do they ever not come -
They re always prepared.
They re always prepared.
[Paloma] They re always prepared.
It s true, they were the sort of supporting cast
to the American designers.
Allied forces, if you will.
All right, ladies, moving on,
because here comes
a very, very important fashion moment, okay?
Oh, wow, wow. My favorite, my favorite.
[Gabriella] The most important.
Let s give it up for the gentlemen from Vermont.
The most important. Totally.
The meme seen round the world, I mean -
Really.
I feel like what he s doing
is what all Gen Z kids want to be giving,
which is absolute nonchalance.
This is how boys dress,
this is hot today.
[Gabriella] This boy -
A 24-year-old man dresses like this.
Yeah. This man
did not text me back last week.
Correct, correct! That s what,
how true that is!
But the mitten, the mitten is heaven.
Well, that s Vermont, all the way.
Artisanal, artisanal. A teacher,
a Vermont teacher made those.
Exactly. Oh, that s really sweet.
Here comes another one.
Oh, key. Oh, yes.
[Gabriella] That yellow, red moment
was actually the star of the day.
Youthful, hopeful, optimism,
I just think it was the punctuation mark
to her amazing speech.
You can t forget how much fashion talks.
Yeah.
[Tonne] It tells you everything that you need to know
about the person, actually. Yes.
Prada s headband moment has been happening for a while,
but I also thought I was so proud of her
because as a woman with natural hair,
if you have braids,
there s kind of like a little bit of politics
around how you re going to show up to such a big event
and maybe an updo feels more formal
and it s hard to wear hair accessories.
That headband is supposed to sit flat
on European straight hair.
And she made it work for her.
She turned it into a tiara.
Correct. She s really,
she s making this look her own.
Very much so.
[Virginia] So, next up we have the president
with his two rescue dogs. Love.
Major! Purple!
[Gabriella] Major and Champ.
Correction [speaks in accent], Major and Champ.
I don t want to make this a crazy thing,
but like the universe is giving purple again.
He hasn t fallen prey to the baggy suit thing
which a lot of political men do.
And this is just
cut very perfectly. This is my favorite outfit.
I feel like he just - He just looks so dapper.
He looks dapper, he looks great,
everything is going in the right direction.
Tonne, needs a bit of a steam, but -
Tonne, Tonne, you start.
He s a busy man, he s a busy man, Paloma,
it s fine, it s Biden.
[Chioma] This is one of my all-time favorite Joe looks.
He s the best when he s Grandpa Joe,
He s literally, lean into that identity,
because you know he s wearing a chunky sneaker
that nobody wants to see on,
but it s endearing and adorable because he s Grandpa Joe.
I don t think he s wearing a chunky sneaker, I m sorry.
He s not wearing it
coming off of Air Force One or Marine Two.
And also, can I talk about,
when we talk about the Camp David baseball hat.
I mean -
Yeah. It s so cute.
[Tonne] The whole thing, the whole thing.
This is what I mean,
it s like barbecue dad in the weird sneakers.
I didn t mean he was actually wearing sneakers.
Okay, I m sorry, you know, I m very literal.
I wonder what shoe he s actually wearing?
I would be curious.
I think it might be a leather loafer.
No, absolutely not, no. You don t think so?
No. Well, what is he gonna wear?
What would it be?
No, he s wearing a chukka.
You know, it s like a desert boot, but it s in leather,
if I got this right. Oh, okay.
And it has, it laces, it s up to the ankle.
Very chic.
Gorgeous.
Very chic.
Honestly. Very chic, sexy, in fact.
Oh.
Ooh, somebody take her offline!
Sexy, sexy!
Okay, next.
Oh, what re you looking at me for?
[all laugh]
[Tonne] May I tell you, she looks fabulous?
[Paloma] Yeah, because it s what she wears every day.
[Tonne] It s true.
[Gabriella] What do you guys think
about a skinny jean, though?
I think she wears it very well.
She wears it very well and it feels relatable.
Apparently on TikTok,
skinny jeans are out.
Skinny jeans and a side part.
TikTok knows what?
I m sorry.
Shots fired.
I mean, what other jean is she going to wear?
What other, she literally cannot wear another jean.
Like, is it a bootleg moment?
That can t really happen.
That jean is like a fingerprint,
it has to be specific to you. Bootleg, boot cut.
[all laugh and clap]
Bootleg, boot cut!
A bootlegger!
Take two.
I also, really, that s my favorite Kamala look.
I would just like to send some, one second, the textures
are really doing - Yes, yes.
[Paloma] A lot for me here.
[Chioma] The satin.
The sat is perfection.
And the slightly two-tone.
That s it s not the same color.
Yeah, it s like a champagne. The textures and the colors,
where it s like you actually don t notice it as such.
cause it s like perfectly married together.
Oh, it s Herrera, okay.
And it s a temperamental fabric.
So that was brave as hell,
because you know she was moving around,
it was a stressful night.
She is like
some gold there. It could have been a mess.
[Gabriella] Accoutrements.
It looked so good!
Yeah, that s true too, it could have been a mess!
But can I just ask a question?
Where did the term pussy bow come from?
I mean, good question.
[Gabriella hums]
Okay, let s not.
So, guys, to wrap it up,
what do we want to see more of
from this administration?
I love how playful the younger generation,
the Ella Emhoffs and the Biden grandkids.
I think it s great
that they re all championing indie American designers.
I think this is a great new way
to think about fashion diplomacy.
And I think here s so many more opportunities
to sort of see where things are gonna go!
Totally. I love that
they re playing by their own rules
and not being so traditional.
That just seems like such a breath of fresh air
in the fashion space.
So more of that.
I also would love to just see
within that, just like more experiment.
That can happen because of the confidence.
I think that all the wardrobe that we ve seen so far,
that it s relaxed.
It s not crazy, but it s confident.
There s a confidence that allows them
to go from here into anything that they want.
Completely agree with what all of you just said.
I m also just really excited
for the first state dinner
or the first foreign press trip.
I want that glamor moment.
I want to see the vice president serving in a gown.
And I want to see Dr. Biden
really leaning into the fashion
because I do think there are certain rules
or codes of conduct
that are restricting some of that experimentation
and can t wait to let them shine.
Well, thanks, you guys.
Thanks for coming.
It was really fun talking today.
We ll have to do it again soon.
I hope so.
I m there.
I have more to say, that s all I can tell you.
I m sure you do. And so does she.
More will be revealed more, more will be revealed.
More and more.
