It’s hard to believe, but it seems the theatrical Wicked press tour is officially done…for good.
Earlier this month, leading stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande concluded their whirlwind journey promoting both of the Wicked and Wicked: For Good films. Over the past two years, there have been countless fashion moments and approaches to method dressing in the big lead-up—always revolving around signature shades of Elphaba green and Glinda pink, of course. But leave it to Grande to save of one of her best Glinda-inspired gowns for last.
Earlier this week, while doing her final Wicked: For Good publicity rounds, Grande posted a new set of images wearing a pink tulle Givenchy gown embroidered with satin ribbons—the perfect, princessy dress that her character Glinda often favors in the films. Even better than being on-theme, however, is the unique backstory that comes with the striking dress.
The wedding frock, first worn by model Angelica Boss on the runway, is actually from Givenchy’s fall 1995 couture collection, designed by Hubert de Givenchy himself. The gown served as the closing look of the couturier’s very last show at the helm of the house, presented at the Grand Hotel in Paris. You could say, then, that it is an iconic piece of fashion history—a museum-worthy frock highlighting one of the influential designer’s final creations. As always, it exemplified his design signatures, putting emphasis on great silhouette, color, and texture.
Three decades later, the design’s low scoop-neck, long sleeves, and full skirt still feels totally timeless on a modern-day superstar like Ariana Grande. (Though, she has a penchant for reviving such retro pieces.)
While the star has worn many vintage creations throughout the whole Wicked tour, as styled by Law Roach, this perfectly-Glinda choice gets bonus points for being from one of the most celebrated couture collections in recent history. Now that is how you do Hollywood fashion, folks.
