Elder Gen-Z-ers and young Millennials alike surely remember the patented Thanksgiving outfit of the 2010s: a button-through skirt, knee-high boots, and a choker necklace in an autumnal palette.
The button-through skirt is practically preserved in amber along with the sock bun and “on fleek” eyebrows. But recently, two Gen-Z stars made a serious case for its return: Lily-Rose Depp and Mikey Madison.
On December 4, Depp promoted her forthcoming film, Nosferatu, in a Chanel houndstooth skirt-suit decorated with rhinestone flowers from Virginie Viard’s pre-fall 2024 collection. Her A-line skirt featured black enamel buttons from top to bottom, following the line of the jacket.
The next day, Madison gave her own take on the look. Doing press for her film Anora, she wore a dramatic Schiaparelli look featuring a black double-breasted coat with a tape measure detail and deep red lining over a black asymmetrical wool jacket with bijoux buttons. On the bottom, she wore a black mid-length pencil skirt fastened with gold nipple buttons. While Schiaparelli is no stranger to the button-through skirt, Madison actually wore this one backward, giving the buttons their moment in the sun. Talk about commitment to the look.
If anyone can bring back the button-through skirt it’s this pair of 25-year-old actors, who would have been in high school at the height of its powers. They know its appeal, but they also know how to bring it into a new era. Who will be so bold as to join them?
