My impression is it s the ballsiest, most beautiful show

I ve ever seen in New York.

(regal music)

Only Thom Browne could use gold lamé as a jumping off

point for a fashion show that meditated on the power of

the Catholic church, well at least that s what I was seeing.

Sin and redemption, you can t beat subject matter like that.

I am Catholic, I am not specifically religious

but I love the idea of the Catholic church and

the romance of the ecclesiastic idea of churches

and the luxurious beauty.

It s all about spectacle, it s all about performance,

which religion is all about, you know the bugle beading

and the gold lamé and the sheered mink.

I mean it was all so rich, it was just the excess

and the sort of decadence of religion that I

was really struck by.

[Tim] You did it in such a strongly cinematic,

like 40s way, Crawford, Stanwick.

The 40s yes because the lamé is actually from the 40s

and there was a very 40s feeling in regards to all the

tailored jackets and in the waisted skirts and dresses.

There s a very deep attachment to materiality

in Thom s clothes because it comes from men s wear,

because men s wear origins were really present.

I mean you saw the, I think Herringbone that was covered

in what looked like gold leaf.

[Tim] You think it was an upbeat collection?

Lovely yes, those big sleeves, it reminded me very

much of couture, like Paris couture.

He s got a very childlike approach, not just to his

fashion but to the world in general and a great

sense of humor to it.

There s always a great innocence to Thom s spectacle

and a great innocence to his decadence.

There s a childlike playfulness I think that will

often comes across the most in his clothes.

[Tim] Now you once told me that the thing that you

would like to do most is make people laugh at your show.

Not just make people laugh, I want to entertain them,

I want to make them laugh.

I want them to see this serious work that goes into

all the clothes because that s really most important

is there is so much work that goes into it

and I m very serious about how the clothes are made.

So I hope that s something they leave with too.
