[Tim] Diane von Furstenberg is a figurehead

of American fashion.

Today is the 10th anniversary

of the 9/11 attacks in New York.

Obviously there s a strong emotional subtext

in today s show.

[upbeat music]

[Diane] We started with an inspiration

of the modern African,

which they are all so cool and hot,

even though sometimes it s sad.

But they re always dignified and wonderful.

And they do wonderful things with recycled fabrics.

So it s a little bit utilitarian,

but also when they dress up they go all the way.

[Interviewer] Now how does this relate to your woman?

[Diane] My woman, she is all of that.

She s optimist and hopeful and utilitarian

and practical and effortless sexy.

[Interviewer] She s just trying to emphasize a sort of

universal spirit in her clothing.

[Anne] I mean, I think that comes

from them being easy to wear.

I know that simplifies it,

but it s like shapes that are easy to wear,

and colors that are fun to wear.

[Valentino] Very easy, beautiful print.

Something very easy for a lady to wear for next summer.

[Interviewer] What did you feel about that show?

[Poppy] I actually think it was probably

my favorite DVF show, ever.

I loved all the graphics,

and I loved the beautiful cape-flowing dresses

and the sequins.

Yeah, I definitely think it was up there.

[Anne] I think what her shows always have

is a real sense of optimism,

and I think that s what we all need today.

And I think that came through with it.

Bright patterns and the colors.

And I think that s something that she does so well.

[Diane] My mission in life is to empower women.

Every way I can.

[Oscar] And the way you sort of a special

at the showing today.

You know, 9/11 because she s an example

of the vitality of a woman today.

[Virginie] Coming from Belgium and building

such a brand, an empire, and then it s possible

really in this country.

And today means something coming from her.

This is what I saw envisioned.

A flow of optimism, colors, prints, whatever.

But behind this, it s amazing to say

sorry of this Belgium woman here in New York today.

[Interviewer] The ability to reinvent.

[Virginie] Exactly.

[dramatic music]

[Interviewer] I was wondering how much you felt

the weight of today when you were doing your show.

[Diane] Well, I call the show beginnings.

It s all about beginnings and hope.

And I feel very American.

[applause]
