By now, you’ve likely heard of the naked dressing trend taking over the red carpets, a movement that has sweeped the premieres and gala events, where top stars are donning sheer or barely-there silhouettes that are all about exposing the body underneath. It certainly takes a certain sense of boldness and confidence to pull the sexy look off—but can it also be done in a more demure way? According to supermodel Kaia Gerber, the answer is yes. The success rate just lies in how you style it.
Last night, Gerber attended the premiere of Benito Skinner’s new series Overcompensating (she stars in an episode of the new Amazon Prime show). Her Victoria Beckham look was the perfect subtle nod to naked dressing: Gerber wore a boxy blazer and mini dress with a pair of sheer thigh-level stockings. Sure, the hosiery look may be typically reserved for the lingerie or boudoir realm, but Gerber made it feel more red carpet-worthy—by offsetting it with her boxy, sharp-shouldered jacket, and pointed Jimmy Choo pumps. (Equally as good, meanwhile? Skinner’s custom ERL outfit.)
But back to Gerber: The model’s exposed stockings felt very much in the spirit of naked dressing—sporting an undergarment as a main garment!—but the look still felt polished and timeless as a whole. Perhaps this is the evolution of the trend: It is less about baring everything, and showing just a dash of skin instead. Consider her take on the movement a Naked Dressing 2.0.—it feels just a little more elevated and refined. Her classy take on the look proves that less can be more.
