Alexander McQueen: Spring 2009 Ready-to-Wear
Released on 11/03/2008

The world is spinning out of control.
What a perfect planet for Alexander McQueen s
latest fashion show.
He took the idea of the harem s,
like almost as if they were like nymphys
and the idea that the hair s almost like veins,
like kind of strewn over the face
so we used a reference like species,
like insect-like almost.
[Interviewer] I always think that Lee McQueen is
kind of like a tortured movie director.
So when you re working with him you
feel like you re making a movie a little bit.
Yeah, he s very passionate.
It may spread out of there,
but his shows is always like a haute couture show.
I ve been a huge, huge admirer of
Alexander McQueen since the very beginning,
so I love just the whole juxtaposition
with like his futuristic angle and perspective on things
and then taking it back to like Noah s Ark,
and it s like the primitive meets the technological world.
[Interviewer] So the engineered prints,
which make a simple shape look so rich that surrounds it.
Probably the biggest message I got out of this show
was that when you re going into recession you need to do
things way up and beyond expectations.
I think that s what he s done.
He s given us color,
he s given us these fabulous, fabulous prints.
I mean I don t how many color shades were in those,
if we can actually get that buoyancy
and that optimism across to the customers
I think that s a great thing.
From far away, it s like watching
gazelles walk into the future.
There was this kind of hard silhouette,
but also I think this idea of technology
that he put into the prints was really
a different way of interpreting this futurism
that we re seeing a lot in the collections this season.
It was beautiful.
We know what Lee does,
and like last season was such a breakthrough for him,
did this season feel like it put
the emphasis on different things?
If you make the comparison it s almost as if you re
kind of talking up one season and not the other,
but I think this was so sexy from the get-go.
Indeed it is a much more playful collection from him
in terms of how light it is,
how much prints he s used,
and how he s softened some of his silhouettes here.
[Interviewer] Were we surprised by the collection at all?
No, not really, no, I thought the shapes
were very McQueen, you know the shoulders,
the restricted waist, I mean the structure
was kind of streamlined.
It s Alexander McQueen s purpose in life
to create beauty like this in the world,
and you know, I aspire to the same,
so God bless him.
