Burberry Prorsum: Spring 2009 Ready-to-Wear

Easy, soft.

Mary Powe is very English, if she s gardening,

she s running in through a summer storm.

She s got these beautiful hats

that kinda like squashed on their heads,

and they kinda just go over their eyes

so all the hair s sort of caught inside.

[Interviewer] She s a country girl now?

Exactly.

Christopher Bailey s men s collection

was inspired by the garden of artist filmmaker

Derek Jarman on the English coast.

It s a very beautiful but melancholic place.

I m looking forward to seeing how he pushes that influence

forward into his women s collection,

especially now that I know the collection

is called Garden Girls

I like the idea of the romance of the garden

I like you know going back to nature.

Because I wanted the collection to be all about outerwear.

It s like a rainy summer day

in the countryside of England

and you feel like you are there.

And his men and his women s go one in the hand of the other,

that is very rare .

♪ If this world of man ♪

It s sort of one world really in which

the Burberry woman and Burberry man live

and so crumple classics for the men

then the kinda crumpled elegance for the women.

I like the idea of something a bit nostalgic.

I think right now it s a moment where you want something

a bit familiar a bit cozy and a bit secure

and I wanted it to be very real

and I wanted it to be a little bit romantic as well.

Christopher bought back an emotional side

but really beautiful clothing that people can actually wear.

It s rich as in I don t need to prove to anyone

that I m worth a billion dollars it s you know

just look like a billion without trying too hard.

Woven straw hats and woven straw bags

which are like kind of peasant style but they re mixed

with this incredible finishing and craftsmanship.

I actually think that s what luxury is going forward.

I don t know it s hard to say it without

it sounding really stupid the luxury...

it s art de poivre, you know in a way

You can say that cause we re in Milan right?

Does wash, I think pight and trenchcoat

with applicator roses they look like

hydrangea that has been dried and is falling apart.

Very romantic moment.

[Interviewer] With the music and the clothing together

you re definitely creating a melancholic mood.

Certainly not the sadness

for me actually it s an optimism.

And it s like a garden, you know

when a garden comes to life?

That s a bit how I feel as well.

[Interviewer] The garden dies and is born again?

And born again always yeah.
